Naccarato Drops 37 as Westbrook Downs Coginchaug; Girls’ Hoops Gets Win Over Old Saybrook

Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball team moved to 3-3 on the year following recent action. The Knights lost to Old Saybrook and then defeated Coginchaug in their last two games.

After losing to Portland in its first game of the season, Westbrook took a 67-41 defeat to Hale-Ray in its second contest. The Knights went on to score victories over Old Lyme (57-49) and Lyman Memorial (59-37) during the next week of play.

On Jan. 4, Westbrook took a 44-28 home loss against Old Saybrook. Then on Jan. 8, the Knights claimed a 60-53 victory versus Coginchaug in a road game.

Westbrook trailed Coginchaug 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Blue Devils 21-13 during the final frame to walk off the floor with a victory. Junior Brandon Naccarato poured home 37 points to help the Knights rally for the win. Senior Joe Caslin netted 17 points for Westbrook in the contest.

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team is sporting a record of 4-2 for the winter season. Last week, the Knights earned a win versus Old Saybrook and then took a loss against Coginchaug.

After defeating Portland in its season opener, Westbrook claimed wins against Whitney Tech (47-8) and Old Lyme (39-31). The Knights then took a 44-36 defeat to Lyman Memorial in their next contest.

In last week’s action, Westbrook faced Old Saybrook on the road and defeated the Rams by the final score of 40-34 on Jan. 4. The Knights trailed Old Saybrook 26-21 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the Rams 19-8 in the final frame to come away with the victory.

Senior Jami Sacco scored 14 points for Westbrook in the win. Sophomore Leticia Pires scored eight points, junior Adriana Stranieri had seven points, senior Alexandra Zanzalari scored six points, and senior Sadie Susi added five points on the night.

Then on Jan. 8, Westbrook hosted Coginchaug and took a 54-28 defeat against the Blue Devils. Sacco scored 17 points for Westbrook in the game.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Southington-Coginchaug-Westbrook (S-C-W) boys’ ice hockey squad moved to 0-3 on the year after losing three recent games.

On Dec. 27, S-C-W took a 9-0 home loss to Rocky Hill/Middletown/Plainville/H-K at Champions Skating Center. Two days later, the team took a 5-0 defeat against the Newington co-op at Newington Ice Arena. On Jan. 3, S-C-W was on the road to face Conard and lost by a 3-0 score at Veterans Memorial Ice Rink.
