Morgan Girls’ Basketball Drops Contest to Guilford; Fencing Program Hosts Invitational


Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team has a record of 1-4 thus far this season. In their most-recent game, the Huskies took a 33-20 defeat at Guilford last week.

Following losses in their first two contests, the Huskies took a 59-22 defeat to Cromwell in their next matchup. Morgan went on to notch its first win of the year with a 42-41 victory over Granby.

On Jan. 6, Morgan played a road game against Guilford. The Huskies lost to the Grizzlies by the final score of 33-20. Sophomore Ava Johnson scored six points for Morgan in the game.

Morgan also had a home game versus Valley Regional slated for Jan. 4, but that contest was postponed, as was its scheduled road game against Haddam-Killingworth on Jan. 7.

Wrestling

The Morgan wrestling team had a road matchup against Notre Dame-West Haven last week. The Huskies took a 54-27 defeat versus the Green Knights on Jan. 5.

Junior Nick Spaziano pinned his opponent at the 3:27 mark of the 132-pound bout. Senior Kevin Hicks prevailed via pinfall in 1:59 in the 160-pound bout for the Huskies. Senior Ethan Reemsnyder won his 182-pound matchup by pin at the 2:17 mark. Senior Jordan Armstrong won an 8-3 decision at 220 pounds for Morgan.

On Jan. 8, Morgan competed in a meet at Southington High School and took a 58-18 loss to Ridgefield. Hicks earned a pinfall victory at 1:06 in the 160-pound weight class. Armstrong prevailed by pin at the 1:11 mark of the 285-pound bout.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Morgan fencing program hosted its first varsity match of the season when the Huskies competed against four teams at the Morgan Invitational on Jan. 8. The Morgan boys’ fencing team went 3-1 on the day be earning victories versus Greenwich, North Haven, and Fairfield to go with a loss to Guilford. The Huskies’ girls’ fencing squad went 2-2 at the meet by defeating Greenwich and North Haven and losing to Fairfield and Guilford.

The Morgan boys’ fencing team defeated Fairfield by a 19-8 score. Junior Nicholas Abbott went 2-0 in foil for the Huskies, while junior Oliver Baker and junior Nicholas Bausch were both 3-0 for épée team. The boys took a 17-10 loss to Guilford, although senior Connor Loth went 3-0 in saber.

Against Greenwich, Morgan won a close contest by a 14-13 score. Loth went 3-0, and junior Noah Borkowski was 2-1 for the Huskies. In the final match of the day, Morgan claimed a 17-10 win over North Haven. Senior Brendan Daly and sophomore Ryder Watson each went 2-1 in foil. Junior Ben Auletta was 3-0 for the saber team. Bausch, Baker, and junior Brayden Esler all went 3-0 in épée to help the Huskies secure the victory.

The Morgan girls’ fencing team took an 18-9 defeat to Fairfield. Senior captain Kyra Savage went 3-0 in saber matches, and sophomore Gavin Gersz led the épée squad by going 2-1. Against Guilford, Morgan took a 21-6 loss, but showed strength in épée with junior Muntara Singh and sophomore Alessa Strunjo both winning two of their bouts.

The Morgan girls won 17-10 against Greenwich, led by 3-0 performances from Savage and senior Ava Rapini on the saber strip. In épée, Gersz went 3-0 for Morgan. Sophomore Sara Morrissey and freshman Meredith O’Brien both added two victories to the team total in foil. In the last match of the day, Morgan defeated North Haven 15-12 with Savage and Rapini both scoring three victories for the Huskies.
