North Haven Girls’ Hoops Begins with a Split; Boys Take Two Defeats

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball team tipped off the winter season by playing a pair of games during the first week of its campaign. North Haven claimed a convincing victory over Amistad and then took a close loss versus Foran to open the year at 1-1.

North Haven hosted non-conference opponent Amistad for its first game of the year and routed the Wolves by the final score of 69-29 on Dec. 14. North Haven held a 21-11 lead after the first quarter and was up 39-17 at halftime against Amistad. North Haven went on to outscore the Wolves by a 24-2 margin in the third quarter to bring a 63-19 lead into the fourth.

Junior Julia Ball scored 23 points to lead North Haven to the victory. Sophomore Ava Johnson had 10 points for Head Coach Tom Blake’s squad. Sophomore Damaria Williams-Davis scored eight points; junior Olivia Johnson, sophomore Ava Halovatch, and sophomore Zaria Bradley had six points apiece; and sophomore Erika Fronte added five points on the night.

Three days later, North Haven played a road game versus Foran and took a 46-45 defeat against the Lions. Ball and Johnson both scored 15 points for North Haven in the game. Junior Talia Annunziato had six points for North Haven.

Boys’ Basketball

The North Haven boys’ basketball team lost two games during the first week of the 2021-’22 season. North Haven is entering its second year with Head Coach Danny Oglesby this winter.

North Haven hosted Branford for its season opener on Dec. 16 and took a 61-43 defeat to the Hornets. Two days later, Coach Oglesby’s club played a home game versus Stamford and dropped a 50-38 decision at Fred Kelly Gymnasium.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team split a pair of games last week to move to 2-2 on the year. Senior Daniella Riga is representing the Blades as a North Haven student on the team this season.

A-NH-C earned a 3-0 home win over Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton-Shelton-New Milford at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Dec. 15. Ellen Barto had a goal with an assist for the Blades in the victory. Freshman Tierney Cox and junior Samantha Drane both scored a goal, while freshman Elaina Scasino and senior Ilana Leyner each had an assist. Sophomore Ginny Currello made 28 saves to get the shutout in net.

Then on Dec. 18, the Blades hosted Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall-O’Brien Tech and lost the matchup by the final score of 9-3.
