Grizzlies Open Winter Season with Wins


Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team notched a victory against Lyman Hall in its first matchup of the winter season. On Dec. 16, the Grizzlies hosted Lyman Hall and won the game by a 59-46 final to jump out to a 1-0 start to the year.

Guilford held a 17-6 lead after the first quarter, but Lyman Hall outscored the Grizzlies 13-5 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 22-19 at halftime. Guilford went on to outscore Lyman Hall in both the third (18-11) and fourth (19-16) quarters to pull away for the 13-point win.

Junior Justin Hess poured home 22 points for the Grizzlies in the victory. Senior captain Cal Bucci and junior Luke Ste. Marie scored 12 points apiece on the night. Junior Isaac Ott Hill had nine points, and senior captain Theo Freeman added four points for Head Coach Jeff DeMaio’s squad.

Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team tipped off the 2021-’22 winter season with a road game against Branford last week. The Grizzlies notched a convincing victory versus the Hornets to open the year at 1-0.

On Dec. 17, Guilford was on the road to face Branford for its first game of the season. Guilford claimed a 51-28 win against the Hornets in the matchup at Branford High School.

Senior Lauren Cunneen scored 18 points for Guilford in the victory. Fellow senior Miabella Diaz had 12 points for the Grizzlies. Senior Faith O’Donnell added eight points on the night.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford boys’ ice hockey team began its winter campaign by playing a pair of games last week. The Grizzlies earned wins versus Milford and Newtown-New Fairfield for a 2-0 start to the year.

Guilford claimed a 6-1 road victory over Milford in its season opener at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Dec. 15. Three days later, the Grizzlies played a road game against Newtown-New Fairfield at Danbury Ice Arena. Guilford won the contest by a 5-1 final to notch its second win on the season.

Wrestling

The Guilford wrestling team headed to Clinton to face Morgan for its first meet in two seasons on Dec. 15. The Grizzlies began their year with a record of 1-0 after posting a 54-12 victory against the Huskies in the contest.

Senior John Fernandes earned a pinfall victory in just 30 seconds in the 120-pound division to help Guilford win the match. Freshman Owen Pelletier-Stephens won an 8-7 decision in the 126-pound bout, while senior Ali Sabea recorded a win via pin at 152 pounds for Guilford.

Senior Eddie Barlage pinned his opponent at the 2:49 mark of his bout in the 160-pound division. Junior Alejandro Colberg-Martinez won a 3-1 decision in the 170-pound division for the Grizzlies.

Senior Brent Strand was a pinfall winner in the 182-pound weight class. Senior captain Christopher Murphy prevailed via pin at the 5:31 mark of his 195-pound bout. Freshman Logan Murphy needed just 34 seconds to pin his opponent in the 285-pound matchup.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Guilford fencing program opened up a new season when its boys’ and girls’ teams when competed against Old Lyme in a road meet on Dec. 16. The Grizzlies started their year strong by winning every varsity bout in the matchup at Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School.

The Guilford boys’ varsity épée team claimed a 9-0 victory against Old Lyme. The girls’ varsity épée squad was also a 9-0 winner in the contest. The girls’ varsity foil team defeated Old Lyme by the final score of 9-0. The boys’ novice foil team notched a 6-2 win in its matchup versus the Wildcats.

The Guilford boys’ varsity fencing team is being led by senior captains AJ Raucci and Noah Provencher, who both fence épée, along with Sands Pascucilla, a foil fencer; and Owen Angkatavanich, who competes in saber. The captains for the girls’ varsity squad are senior Lucia Rusconi, an épée fencer; and junior Taylor Smith, who competes in foil.

The other seniors on the boys’ team are épée fencers Jake Burrell, David Crair, Maximus Riat, Luke Robbins, and Daniel White; foil fencer Jay Patel; and saber fencer Jerry Li.

The other seniors on the girls’ team are foil fencer Haley Fulton, épée competitor Catherine Pena, and saber fencer Kristina Libby.
