Old Lyme-Valley-Saybrook Co-op Swims in States


The Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Valley Regional girls’ swimming and diving team came in ninth place at the Class M State Championship at Cornerstone Aquatic Center on Nov. 16. The Old Lyme-Valley Regional-Old Saybrook (OL-VR-OS) girls' swimming and diving team sent several athletes to compete at the Class M State Championship at Cornerstone Aquatic Center on Nov. 16.

OL-VR-OS posted team scored of 264 points to finish in ninth place out of the 21 teams that participated in the meet.

The athletes who swam for OL-VR-OS at the Class M State Championship included juniors Maddie Beaudoin, Laura Day, and Lauren Lee of Old Saybrook, along with senior Loretta Cecchini, senior Zoe Cika, and junior Elly Rothrock from Valley Regional. Katie Roberts, a senior at Valley Regional, is also a member of the team and competed at the Class M Qualifying that was held a few days before the championship meet.

Cecchini turned in the top performance for OL-VR-OS at the Class M State Championship by taking second place in the 100-yard freestyle. Cecchini finished with a personal-

best time of 55.73 seconds on her way to placing second for the 100 freestyle and earning All-State honors in the event. Cecchini only placed behind junior Elise Richardson of Lyman Hall, who won the 100 free with a time of 54.42. Cecchini also took sixth place in the 50 freestyle with a personal-best time of 25.95 at the state meet.

The 400 freestyle relay for OS-VR-OL came in fifth place in states. The quartet of Day, Cika, Rothrock, and Cecchini recorded its all-time top time of 3:54.61 en route to its a fifth-place finish. The 200 medley relay featuring Lee, Rothrock, Day, and Cecchini took 10th place at 2:00.92, which marked its best time.

In addition to Cecchini, OL-VR-OS saw two other swimmers notch top-10 finishes in individual events at the Class M meet. Rothrock took seventh place in the 100 butterfly with a personal-best time of 1:04.01. Cika finished eighth for the 50 freestyle by finishing the event in 26.50. Cika had recently swam a personal best of 26.47 in the 50 free at the Class M Qualifying.

Rothrock also finished 12th in the individual medley with a personal-best mark of 2:24.18 at the championship. Cika took 15th place in the 100 freestyle behind a personal best of 58.87.

Day swam a personal-best time of 5:48.72 on her way to finishing 11th in the 500 freestyle. Day also placed 13th in the 200 freestyle with a 2:07.94, marking another personal-best performance for Head Coach Rachel Mauthe's squad.

Lee finished in 11th place for the 100 backstroke by recording a personal-best time of 1:05.75 in states. Lee also turned in her all-time best time with a 2:26.13 in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 13th place.

Beaudoin finished 23rd place in the 100 breaststroke for OL-VR-OS at the State Championship. Beaudoin swam a personal-best time of 1:17.70 on her way to placing 23rd for the event.

Beaudoin had previously recorded a personal-best time of 2:32.29 in the 200 individual medley at the Class M Qualifying meet at East Hartford High School on Nov. 13.

Additionally at that meet, Roberts swam a personal-best time of 6:43.29 in the 500 freestyle on behalf of OL-VR-OS.
