Hornets Swim at Class S Championship

The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team sent several athletes to compete at the Class S State Championship last week. The Hornets scored 81 points as a squad and finished in a tie for 18th place at Cornerstone Aquatic Center in West Hartford on Nov. 17.

Senior Erika Barone competed in a pair of individual events for Branford at the Class S State Championship. Barone finished in sixth place for the 100-yard backstroke by swimming a time of 1:03.59 in the event. Barone also took 11th place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:24.45 for the Hornets.

Branford had three relays compete in state meet. The Hornets’ 400 freestyle relay of junior Emma Hall, freshman Kylie Acquarulo-Savastano, freshman Erin Newlan, and Barone finished in 17th place by recording a time of 4:28.72.

Branford’s 200 medley relay of Hall, senior Mareyna McCaughtry, Acquarulo-Savastano, and senior Sydney Baker posted a time of 2:30.40 to finish in 19th place. The 200 freestyle relay of Hall, McCaughtry, Newlan, and Baker also finished in 19th place with their time of 2:15.23.
