H-K Volleyball Loses in Class M Quarterfinals; Soccer Teams Also Eliminated


Girls’ Volleyball

One week after winning its second-straight Shoreline Conference title, the Haddam-Killingworth girls’ volleyball team competed in the Class M State Tournament last week. The Cougars won their opening match before losing to Seymour in the quarterfinal round, ultimately finishing their campaign with an overall record of 19-5.

H-K was the No. 7 seed in the Class M tourney and had a bye through the first round. In the second round, the Cougars hosted No. 10 seed Branford on Nov. 10 and swept the Hornets by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) score.

Two days later, H-K faced 2nd-seeded Seymour for a quarterfinal matchup on the road. H-K dropped a 3-1 decision against the Wildcats, losing the tightly contested match by the score of 25-22, 25-22, 26-28, 26-24.

Girls’ Soccer

The H-K girls’ soccer team took a one-goal loss to Granby in the first round of the Class M State Tournament last week. The Cougars finished with an overall record of 6-7-3 on the campaign.

No. 24 seed H-K hit the road to face No. 9 Granby for a first-round states games on Nov. 8. The Cougars were edged out by the Bears by the final score of 2-1 in the contest.

Boys’ Soccer

The H-K boys’ soccer squad took a defeat versus Ledyard in a Class M State Tournament first-round game last week. The Cougars posted an overall record of 7-10-1 for the year.

No. 25 seed H-K played a road game against No. 8 Ledyard in the first round of the Class M bracket. The Cougars were eliminated from the tournament by taking a 9-1 loss to Ledyard on Nov. 9.

Football

The H-K football team took an 8-7 road loss against the CREC Co-op squad in a Pequot Sassacus Division contest on Nov. 13. The Cougars now have an overall record of 2-6 with a mark of 1-5 in divisional play this year.

Junior Tate Callender scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to give H-K a lead over CREC in the first quarter. Senior Kevin Cavrell kicked the extra point to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead, which held up as the score at halftime.

Cayden Ortiz rushed for a 15-yard touchdown for CREC in the third quarter to make the score 7-6. Ortiz followed by running in the 2-point conversion to put CREC up 8-7. CREC was able to keep H-K off the board for the rest of the game and hung on for the one-point victory.

H-K’s next game is versus the SMSA Co-op (4-4) team at Falcon Field in Meriden on Friday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. The Cougars will finish their season by playing Valley Regional-Old Lyme in the annual battle for the Principal’s Cup at Valley Regional High School in Deep River on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m.
