Warriors Run Well at States; Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Volleyball Lose in Shorelines

Girls’ Cross Country

The Valley Regional girls’ cross country team saw two athletes record top-10 performances on its way to finishing fifth as a squad at the Class SS State Championship last week. The Warriors posted a team score of 175 points to take fifth place at Wickham Park in Manchester on Nov. 1.

Senior Ava Cunningham finished in fifth place for the race when the Warriors competed at states last week. Cunningham ran a time of 21 minutes and 31 seconds en route to earning a fifth-place finish.

Fellow senior Grace Jacaruso came in ninth place for Valley at the Class SS meet. Jacaruso crossed the finish line with a time of 21:51 to claim ninth place on behalf of the Warriors.

Senior Stephanie Sheehan took 28th place by running a time of 23:34 in states. Senior Isabella Sacks finished in 49th place (24:55) for Valley Regional. Fellow senior Campbell Toth finished in 115th place (30:55).

A few days after the Class SS meet, Jacaruso and Cunningham represented Valley at the State Open at Wickham Park on Nov. 5. Jacaruso ran a time of 21:07 to finish in 82nd place at the Open. Cunningham finished in 108th place with a time of 21:35.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Valley Regional boys’ cross country squad was represented by several runners when the Class SS State Championship took place at Wickham Park on Nov. 1. The Warriors finished in ninth place with 285 points scored at the meet.

Senior Ryan Reed led the Valley pack by taking 35th place at states. Reed finished with a time of 19 minutes and 36 seconds on his way to finishing in 35th place.

Sophomore Zachary Scott finished in 53rd place (20:10), while senior Sam Iselin came in 55th place (20:16) for the Warriors. Sophomore Elliot Stack finished in 76th place (20:47), and senior Jobe Goetz finished in 80th place (20:51).

Junior Quentin Baron came in 98th place (21:19) for Valley in states. Sophomore Aidan Babek finished in 123rd place (22:21) at the meet.

Boys’ Soccer

The Valley Regional boys’ soccer squad took a loss against Morgan in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals last week. The Warriors are competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

No. 2 seed Valley Regional hosted No. 3 Morgan for a Shoreline semifinal game in Deep River on Nov. 2. Morgan defeated the Warriors by the score of 5-1 to advance to the final.

Valley (11-5-1) is the No. 10 seed in the Class S State Tournament and hosted No. 23 Terryville in the first round on Nov. 9 (after press time). With a victory, the Warriors would play the winner of No. 7 St. Bernard and No. 26 Hale-Ray in the second round on Thursday, Nov. 11. The quarterfinals are on Saturday, Nov. 13, the semis will be held from Tuesday, Nov. 16 to Thursday, Nov. 18, and the Class S final is on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Valley Regional girls’ volleyball team took a five-set loss against Coginchaug in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Warriors will be taking part in the Class M State Tournament that gets underway this week.

On Nov. 1, the 5th-seeded Warriors traveled to Durham to take on No. 4 Coginchaug in the first round of Shorelines. The Blue Devils edged out the Warriors by the final score of 3-2 to move on to the semifinal round, where they took a 3-2 defeat to Haddam-Killingworth.

Valley (12-9) has the No. 17 seed in the Class M State Tournament and played a first-round match at No. 16 Barlow on Nov. 8 (after press time). With a win there, Valley would have played at No. 1 seed Weston in the second round on Nov. 10 (after press time). The quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 12, the semifinals take place on Tuesday, Nov. 16, and the Class M state final is at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Football

The Valley Regional-Old Lyme (VR-OL) football team hosted Granby-Canton for a Pequot Conference game on Nov. 5. The Warriors took a 17-7 loss against the Bears at Valley Regional High School to move to 2-5 in the 2021 season.

The next contest for VR-OL is a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division road game versus Old Saybrook-Westbrook (0-6) on Saturday, Nov. 13. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. at Old Saybrook High School.

Girls’ Soccer

The Valley Regional girls’ soccer team is participating in the Class M State Tournament this week.

The Warriors (5-8-3) are the No. 29 seed in the Class M bracket and opened up the draw by playing a first-round road game against Mercy on Nov. 8 (after press time). If the Warriors won that game, they played a second-round contest on Nov. 10 (after press time). The quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 12, the semis take place from Tuesday, Nov. 16 to Thursday, Nov. 18, and the Class M final will be held at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21.
