North Haven Girls’ Volleyball Loses in SCC Quarters; Cross Country Hits the Trails at States

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team took a loss to Mercy in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament last week. With its overall record of 17-5, North Haven will open play in the Class L State Tournament this week.

On Nov. 2, No. 3 seed North Haven hosted No. 6 Mercy for a SCC quarterfinal contest. The Tigers won the match 3-1 with set scores of 27-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21 to advance to the semifinals, where they lost to Amity.

Senior Hannah Auddino had 31 assists with six digs and two aces for North Haven. Fellow senior Caroline Toni recorded 18 kills to go with 13 digs and two aces. Junior Maren Hill had six kills in the match.

Auddino made the All-SCC First Team, and Toni earned a spot on the All-SCC Second Team this season. North Haven’s head coach, Brianna Kleckner, was named the SCC Coach of the Year.

North Haven is the No. 5 seed in the Class L State Tournament and started off the draw with a first-round match versus No. 28 Bethel on Nov. 8 (after press time). If North Haven won that match, it will host the winner of No. 12 Fitch and No. 21 Lyman Hall in the second round on Thursday, Nov. 11. The quarterfinals are on Saturday, Nov. 13, the semifinals take place on Wednesday, Nov. 17, and the Class L state final is at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Girls’ Cross Country

The North Haven girls’ cross country squad saw several runners hit the trails to compete in the Class MM State Championship at Wickham Park on Nov. 1. North Haven posted a team score of 369 points and finished in 14th place at the state meet.

Junior Payton Orosco put forth the best performance for North Haven at states. Orosco crossed the finish line with a time of 23 minutes and 1 second to come in 36th place in the race.

Freshman Daniella Rapuano finished in 72nd place with a time of 24:37 for North Haven. Fellow freshman Amalia Morizio ran a time of 25:20 to finish in 83rd place.

Freshman Grace DeNardis finished in 92nd place (25:41) in states. Senior Riley Minns finished in 121st place (28:01), and junior Elisabetta Sposito came in 135th place (30:57) for North Haven.

Boys’ Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ cross country team was represented by several athletes at last week’s Class MM State Championship meet. North Haven scored 402 points and finished in 14th place at Wickham Park on Nov. 1.

Junior Tyler Wurm led the North Haven pack by finishing in 60th place with a time of 19 minutes and 40 seconds. Senior Luke Nugent finished in 66th place (19:49), while fellow senior Michael Rubano took 71st place (20:12) at the state meet.

Sophomore Anthony Signor finished in 108th place (21:46) for North Haven. Freshman Matthew DeNardis finished in 113th place (21:59), sophomore Nico Boyle finished in 118th (22:16), and junior Blake Butler came in 129th place (23:10).

Football

The North Haven football team traveled to Madison to take on Hand for an SCC Tier 1 matchup on Nov. 5. North Haven took a 28-21 defeat against the Tigers at the Surf Club to move to 3-5 in the 2021 season.

North Haven overcame an early two-score deficit to tie the game 14-14 during the third quarter and then came back again after falling behind to make it 21-21 in the fourth. However, Hand scored the go-ahead touchdown later in the fourth quarter and went on to get the seven-point victory.

North Haven is playing a road game versus SCC opponent Hillhouse (1-6) on Friday, Nov. 12. The contest kicks off at 6 p.m. at Bowen Field in New Haven.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer team is competing in the Class L State Tournament this week.

As the No. 21 seed, North Haven opened up the Class L tourney by playing a first-round game at No. 12 seed Bullard Havens on Nov. 8 (after press time). With a win, North Haven would have faced No. 5 Ledyard on the road in the second round on Nov. 10 (after press time). The quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 12, the semis take place from Tuesday, Nov. 16 to Thursday, Nov. 18, and the championship game is at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21.
