North Haven Girls’ Swimming and Diving Competes in SCCs

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving squad hit the water to compete in the SCC Championship that took place at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 3. North Haven put forth a solid showing at SCCs by taking sixth place out of 17 teams with 586 points scored at the meet.

North Haven turned in several top-5 and top-10 performances on its way to finishing sixth at SCCs. Junior Alice Scalmani took fourth place in the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 2:15.48 for North Haven. Scalmani also finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke by finishing with a time of 1:11.39.

Junior Mikayla Rapuano claimed sixth place in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle for North Haven. Rapuano swam a time of 59.67 on her way to placing sixth in the 100 fly and then timed in with a mark of 2:01.66 to finish sixth for the 200 free.

North Haven’s 200 medley relay of Rapuano, Scalmani, senior Giulia Faulkner, and senior Grace Finch finished in fifth place with a time of 1:55.21 at the SCC Championship. The 400 freestyle relay of Rapuano, senior Taya Laborde, Faulkner, and Scalmani also took fifth place by recording a mark of 3:50.95. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Finch, junior Makenzie Alogna, senior Abrielle Osborne, and Laborde came in ninth place with a time of 1:49.31.

A few days before the swimming portion of the meet, the SCC Diving Championship took place at Sheehan High School on Oct. 30. North Haven had three divers score points toward the team’s overall total, led by senior El Lana-Coleman, who finished in third place.

Coleman posted a score of 327.95 points on her way to taking third place for North Haven in the SCC diving competition. Senior Chandler Ceste-Martinez finished in 14th place with 267.00 points, while fellow senior Trinity Bullock finished in 26th by scoring 199.20 points on the board.

Laborde finished 10th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.21 at the SCC Championship. Laborde also finished 15th for the 50 freestyle by swimming a time of 26.64. Faulkner took 15th place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.38 and finished 18th in the 10 butterfly at 1:05.25.

Finch finished with a time of 59.20 to come in 16th place for the 100 freestyle. Finch also recorded a mark of 26.84 in the 50 freestyle to place 17th for North Haven. Osborne finished 19th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:05.28 and took 21st place in the 200 individual medley by clocking in at 2:28.60.

Junior Tara Stoeffler finished in 19th place for the 500 freestyle at SCCs. Stoffler hit the finish line with a time of 5:54.84 on her way to placing 19th. Fellow junior Victoria Pachnik came in 29th place in the 500 free by swimming a time of 6:12.26.

Alogna took 25th place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.16 and also finished 32nd in the 100 freestyle by swimming a time of 1:02.21. Sophomore Maidsen Karavas timed in with a mark of 2:17.01 to finish in 29th place for the 200 freestyle.

North Haven is competing in the Class M State Championship this week. The Diving Championship is at Sheehan High School on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m.; the Swimming Qualifying takes place East Hartford High School on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m.; and the Swimming Championship is at Cornerstone Aquatic Center in West Hartford on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.
