H-K Football Takes a Loss; Soccer Squads Ready for States


Football

The Haddam-Killingworth football team hosted Rockville for a Pequot Conference contest on Nov. 5. The Cougars took a 34-15 defeat to Rockville at H-K High School to move to 2-5 on the season.

Junior quarterback Alex Phipps threw two touchdown passes to senior Ryan Duncanson for the Cougars in the game. With H-K trailing 14-0 after one, Phipps found Duncanson for an 11-yard scoring strike to get the Cougars on the board. Senior Kevin Cavrell kicked the extra point to make it 14-6. Later in the second quarter, Phipps tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Duncanson to bring H-K within one at 14-13 at halftime.

Rockville (6-1) scored the only touchdown of the third quarter to take a 20-13 lead into the fourth. Rockville went on to score two more TDs during the fourth quarter to pull away for the 34-15 victory. Senior Nick Glynn tackled a Rockville player in the end zone for a safety to account for H-K’s final two points of the game in the fourth quarter.

H-K’s next game is on the road versus the CREC Co-op (1-7) on Saturday, Nov. 13. The game gets underway at 11 a.m. at Civic Leadership High School in Enfield.

Girls’ Soccer

The H-K girls’ soccer team is competing in the Class M State Tournament this week.

As the No. 24 seed, H-K (6-6-3) opened the Class M draw by playing a first-round road game versus No. 9 Granby on Nov. 8 (after press time). With a win, the Cougars would have faced the winner of No. 8 Morgan and No. 25 New Fairfield in the second round on Nov. 10. The quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 12, the semis take place from Tuesday, Nov. 16 to Thursday, Nov. 18, and the Class M final will be held at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21.

Boys’ Soccer

The H-K boys’ soccer squad begins its second phase of the postseason when the Cougars participate in the Class M State Tournament this week.

H-K (7-9-1) is the No. 25 seed in the Class M State Tournament and started off by facing No. 8 Ledyard on the road in the first round on Nov. 9 (after press time). If the Cougars won that game, they will play the winner of No. 9 Granby and No. 24 Seymour in a second-round contest on Thursday, Nov. 11. The quarterfinals are on Saturday, Nov. 13, the semis will be held from Tuesday, Nov. 16 to Thursday, Nov. 18, and the Class M final is on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford.
