Guilford Field Hockey, Volleyball Advance in SCCs

Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team won its final two games of the regular season and then claimed victory in an SCC Tournament quarterfinal contest last week. The Grizzlies improved to 16-1 on the year with these wins.

Guilford earned a 5-0 home victory versus Amity in its regular-season finale on Oct. 27. The following day, Guilford faced East Lyme on the road and notched a 7-0 shutout.

Then on Oct. 30, top-seeded Guilford opened play in the SCC Tournament by hosting No. 8 Mercy for a quarterfinal game. The Grizzlies defeated the Tigers by the final tally of 10-0 to advance into the semifinal round.

Senior Maddie Epke scored eight goals to go with six assists between Guilford’s three games on the week.

Guilford hosted No. 4 Branford in the SCC semifinals on Nov. 1 (after press time). If the Grizzlies won, they played the winner of No. 2 Cheshire and No. 3 Sacred Heart Academy in the final on Nov. 3 (after press time).

Guilford will also be participating in the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Monday, Nov. 8 and runs through the championship at Wethersfield High School on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Guilford girls’ volleyball team ended its regular season on a high note and then opened the SCC Tournament with a victory last week. Guilford is now standing with a record of 11-8 on the campaign.

On Oct. 25, Guilford hosted Shelton and posted a 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7) in its last contest of the regular season. Four days later, the No. 8 seed Grizzlies faced No. 9 Sheehan in the first round of the SCC Tournament at home. The Grizzlies defeated the Titans by the final score of 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 25-12) to advance into the quarterfinal round.

Guilford played at No. 1 seed Cheshire in the SCC quarterfinals on Nov. 2 (after press time). With a win, the Grizzlies would face the winner of No. 4 Branford and No. 5 Hand in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4. The SCC final is at West Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.

After SCCs, Guilford will take part in the Class L State Tournament. The tourney begins on Monday, Nov. 8 and finishes with the title match at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer team concluded its regular season and then competed in the first round of the SCC Tournament during the past week of action. The Grizzlies defeated Hamden in their regular-season finale and then lost to Fairfield Prep in SCCs to move to 11-4-2 on the year.

On Oct. 25, Guilford played a road game versus Hamden and prevailed by a 4-1 score. Junior Tyler Yerkes scored the first goal of the game unassisted for the Grizzlies. Junior Sami AbuGhazaleh netted the next three goals for Guilford as it pulled away for the victory.

Then on Oct. 30, No. 5 seed Guilford played at No. 4 Fairfield Prep in a SCC quarterfinal game and took a 2-1 overtime loss to the Jesuits. AbuGhazaleh scored the lone goal for the Grizzlies in the defeat.

Guilford is competing in the Class L State Tournament that begins on Saturday, Nov. 6 and finishes with the championship game at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer team won its last two regular-season games before taking a loss in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament last week. The Grizzlies have a record of 8-6-3 as they get ready to play in states.

On Oct. 25, the Grizzlies hosted Lauralton Hall and won the contest by 7-0 score. Three days later, the Grizzlies finished their regular season by claiming a 6-0 home win against Wilbur Cross.

On Oct. 30, No. 7 seed Guilford traveled to Woodbridge to face No. 2 Amity in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals. Guilford dropped a 2-1 decision versus the Spartans in the game.

Next up for the Grizzlies is the Class L State Tournament that starts on Saturday, Nov. 6 and culminates with the final on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team had a road meet against Lyman Hall at Sheehan Hall High School on Oct. 25. Guilford and Lyman Hall finished the matchup in a 93-93 tie as the Grizzlies moved to 10-1-1 on the season.

Guilford has the SCC Championship this week and will be competing in the Class M State Championship after that.
