H-K Football Takes 28-27 Loss to North Branford; Volleyball, Field Hockey Win 2 of 3


Football

The Haddam-Killingworth football team took a 28-27 home loss against North Branford in a Pequot Conference contest on Oct. 22. The Cougars moved to 1-4 on the year with the defeat.

H-K opened the scoring in the first quarter when junior quarterback Orion Inkel threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to fellow junior Alex Phipps. Senior Kevin Cavrell converted the extra point to put the Cougars up 7-0. Later in the quarter, Inkel found Phipps for a 5-yard TD pass, and the extra point by Cavrell gave the Cougars a 14-0 lead.

Following a North Branford touchdown, Cavrell drilled a 35-yard-field goal to put H-K up 17-6. Inkel ran in a 9-yard touchdown later in the frame, and another extra point by Cavrell gave the Cougars a 24-6 halftime advantage.

North Branford went on to outscore H-K by a 22-3 margin during the second half to come away with the one-point victory. The Thunderbirds scored a touchdown in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-14. Following a 25-yard field goal by Cavrell early in the fourth, North Branford scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 28-27 lead and then held H-K off the scoreboard the rest of the way to get the victory.

Girls’ Volleyball

The H-K girls’ volleyball team won two out of its three matches last week to improve its record to 15-2 this year.

On Oct. 20, H-K hosted Old Lyme and came away with a 3-0 victory. One day later, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and posted a 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-7) shutout. Sophomore Sammy Minickene had 10 service points with seven aces and three kills for H-K. Fellow sophomore Annabelle Zajac accumulated eight service points, four aces, and two kills.

H-K’s lone loss of the week came at Valley Regional on Oct. 22. The Cougars dropped the match by the final score of 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-14, 15-5). Senior Audrey Snyder had 21 service points, four aces, and 13 kills for the Cougars. Fellow seniors Jessica Timothy tallied 24 kills with two aces and six service points.

Field Hockey

The H-K field hockey team won two of its three contests last week to improve to 3-10-1-1 on the season.

H-K played a road game against Mercy on Oct. 18 and prevailed by a 1-0 final. Two days later, the Cougars hosted Canton and claimed another 1-0 victory. H-K ended its week with a 5-1 home loss against Valley Regional on Oct. 23.

Girls’ Soccer

The H-K girls’ soccer team finished its regular season at 6-6-3 after taking two losses and earning a draw in recent action.

On Oct. 18, H-K played Morgan to a 1-1 tie in a home game. Senior Hadley Commerford scored the lone goal of the game for the Cougars on an assist from junior Leah Chester. Senior goalkeeper Brianna Nugent made seven saves in the draw.

Two days later, H-K hosted East Catholic and took a 3-2 defeat. Sophomore Tu-Lanh Criscuolo scored three minutes into the game on an assist from senior Yumi Imai. Commerford scored the Cougars’ other goal in the second half, assisted by Criscoulo.

In its last game of the week, H-K hosted Cromwell lost a 1-0 decision. Nugent made two saves in net, and senior Sophia Torello stopped four shots for H-K.

Boys’ Soccer

The H-K boys’ soccer team concluded its regular season playing a road game versus Morgan last week. On Oct. 19, the Cougars traveled to Clinton to face Morgan and took a 2-0 loss to the Huskies. H-K posted a regular-season record of 7-8-1.
