The Valley Regional field hockey team completed an undefeated regular season by claiming a pair of road victories last week. The Warriors posted an overall record of 15-0-1 after earning wins against Somers and Haddam-Killingworth during the final week of the regular season.
In its first game of the week, Valley notched a 9-1 win at Somers in a non-conference matchup on Oct. 21. Senior Abby Amara scored three goals to go with one assist for the Warriors. Fellow senior Mia Alio scored two goals and had two assists on the day.
Senior Margaret Jacaruso scored a pair of goals, while freshman Lilly Lavigne had one goal with two assists for Valley. Senior Brooke Lavigne scored a goal, and senior teammate Emily Kateley had an assist in the victory.
Two days later, the Warriors were back on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and claimed a 5-1 victory to cap off their unbeaten regular season. Jacaruso scored three goals to go with an assist in the win. Amara had three assists, senior Grace Haskins posted a goal and an assist, and Brooke Lavigne added a goal for Head Coach Beth McCabe Powers’s team.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Valley Regional girls’ volleyball squad claimed victory in all three of its matches last week to improve to 10-8 with two contests left in the regular season. The Warriors netted shutouts against Cromwell and East Hampton before winning a five-setter against Haddam- Killingworth in last week’s matchups.
On Oct. 18, Valley played a road match versus Cromwell and blanked the Panthers by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-9) score. Two days later, the Warriors claimed a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-12) home victory against East Hampton on Senior Night. Senior captain Salmi Miller had four digs with five kills and a 15-point service run that included three aces for Valley. Fellow senior captain Madison Neviaser posted four kills to go with seven digs and two aces. Junior Audrey Board finished the match with eight kills and one block.
Then on Oct. 22, Valley hosted Haddam-Killingworth and claimed a 3-2 victory over the Cougars to cap off its perfect week. The Warriors rallied to win the match with set scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, and 15-13.
Junior Kaia Karcich had 16 digs and served up two aces to help Valley prevail. Neviaser notched five kills with 18 digs and two aces; Miller had five digs, 20 digs, and three aces; and Board tallied seven kills and five blocks.
Football
The Valley Regional-Old Lyme (VR-OL) football team traveled to Hartford to take on the CREC Co-op squad for a Saturday morning matchup on Oct. 23. The Warriors claimed a 35-0 victory against CREC at Civic Leadership High School to improve their record to 2-3 on the season.
The next game for VR-OL is a home matchup versus Stafford-East Windsor-Somers (3-3) on Friday, Oct. 29. The contest kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Richard B. Blythe Field at Valley Regional High School.
Boys’ Soccer
The Valley Regional boys’ soccer team completed its regular season by playing games against Old Lyme, Hale-Ray, and Old Saybrook last week. The Warriors came away from the stretch with two victories to finish with a record of 11-4-1 for regular-season play this year.
The Warriors started off their week by claiming a 5-2 road victory over Old Lyme on Oct. 19. Valley went on to claim a 4-0 home victory against Hale-Ray on Oct. 21. Two days later, Valley played a road game with Old Saybrook and took a 5-3 defeat to the Rams in its regular-season finale.
Girls’ Soccer
The Valley girls’ soccer squad played three non-conference games last week and wound up earning a win and a tie to move to 5-6-3 on the season. The Warriors played Old Lyme to a draw, took a loss to East Lyme, and then defeated Fitch in last week’s contests.
On Oct. 18, the Warriors hosted Old Lyme and battled the Wildcats to a 0-0 tie. Three days later, Valley faced East Lyme on the road and took a 2-0 loss to the Vikings.
Then on Oct. 23, the Warriors earned a 3-2 win versus Fitch in a home game at Valley Regional High School, qualifying for the Class M State Tournament with the victory. Junior Olivia Baldwin scored an unassisted goal in the first four minutes of the game to give Valley a 1-0 lead. Junior Anna Benson and junior Reagan Doyon scored the Warriors’ next two goals on assists by senior Sophia Surber for a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
Fitch scored two quick goals in the last six minutes of the contest, but the Warriors were able to hang on for the 3-2 win to make states. Junior goalie Liz Allen made 10 saves in net for Valley.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Valley Regional boys’ cross country team competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship at East Hampton High School
on Oct. 23. The Warriors posted a team scored of 206 points and finished in eighth place at the meet.
Senior Ryan Reed turned in Valley’s top performance by taking 27th place with a time of 19:56 at Shorelines. Sophomore Zackary Scott ran a time of 20:36 to finish in 37th place, while fellow sophomore Elliot Stack finished in 40th with a mark of 20:38.
Senior Sam Iselin finished in 48th place (21:01) for the Warriors at the Shoreline meet. Sophomore Aidan Babek finished in 54th place (21:30), junior Quentin Baron took 56th place (21:33), and senior Jobe Goetz finished in 70th place (27:17) on behalf of Valley Regional.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Valley Regional girls’ cross country program was represented by four athletes at last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship. The meet took place at East Hampton High School on Oct. 23.
Senior Ava Cunningham paced her way to a fourth-place finish for the Warriors at Shorelines. Cunningham crossed the finish line with a time of 22:19 on her way to taking fourth place. Fellow senior Grace Jacaruso came in eighth place by running a time of 22:39 for Valley.
Senior Stephanie Sheehan finished in 17th place (23:42) at the Shoreline meet. Fellow senior Campbell Toth came in 51st place (32:17) for the Warriors.
