North Haven Football Shuts Out Stratford, 21-0; Girls’ Soccer Wins Big Against Hamden

Football

The North Haven football team hosted Stratford for a Friday night matchup at Vanacore Field on Oct. 22. North Haven recorded a 21-0 victory against Stratford in the non-conference contest to earn its second-straight win and improve to 2-4 on the year.

Senior captain Matt Dodge scored all three of North Haven’s touchdowns in its win versus Stratford. Dodge threw a touchdown pass, rushed for a score, and also reeled in a receiving TD to help North Haven prevail.

Dodge put North Haven on the board when he tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Anthony Cavaliere in the first quarter. Then in the second quarter, Dodge capped off a nice drive by scoring on a 3-yard run to help North Haven take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, junior Jeff Karavas found Dodge for a 52-yard touchdown strike for another North Haven score. Cavaliere kicked his third extra point of the night to give North Haven a 21-0 advantage. North Haven’s defense kept the Red Devils off the board the rest of the way, and Head Coach Anthony Sagnella’s squad walked off the field with its second victory of the campaign.

Karavas carried the ball 15 times for 84 yards in the victory. Sophomore Adam Pandolfi had nine rushes for 50 yards, junior Brian Lastomirsky ran seven times for 48 yards, and Dodge had 10 carries for 46 yards.

On defense, senior Matthew Cocco and junior Michael Masto both had a sack in the win. Karavas had an interception for North Haven. Pandolfi made nine tackles on the night.

North Haven’s next game is at home versus non-conference opponent Pomperaug (0-5) on Friday, Oct. 29. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Vanacore Field.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer squad took on Hamden and Branford in last week’s action. North Haven posted a resounding victory over Hamden and then took a loss against Branford to move to 6-8 heading into the last week of the regular season.

In its first game of the week, North Haven hosted Hamden on Oct. 20 and notched a 7-0 shutout versus the Green Dragons. Senior Ada Forbes turned in a huge performance by scoring five goals for North Haven in the victory. Sophomore Lily Coish also had a big game with one goal and four assists.

Forbes scored her first goal on an assist from junior Lily Coish in the first three minutes of the game. Forbes netted her second goal in the 17th minute on another assist by Coish. Three minutes later, Forbes completed her hat trick by scoring her third goal of the game for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Forbes scored her fourth goal early in the second half to make it 4-0. Sophomore Rebecca Ford followed with a goal from Coish to increase the lead to 5-0. Coish went on to score her first goal of the night for a 6-0 advantage and later assisted Forbes for North Haven’s final goal to finish off the 7-0 victory.

Senior goalie Annalise Moulis made seven saves in net to help North Haven get the shutout. Head Coach Gary Collins also noted that freshman Alison Palmieri played a great game and made some nice passes at the outside back position.

Three days later, North Haven faced Branford on the road and dropped a 6-1 decision versus the Hornets.

Boys’ Soccer

The North Haven boys’ soccer team played three games last week and came away with one victory to move to 4-9-1 in the 2021 season. North Haven took losses against Cheshire and Lyman Hall before defeating East Haven to wrap up the week.

On Oct. 18, North Haven hosted Cheshire and took a 6-2 defeat to the Rams. Two days later, North Haven faced Lyman Hall on the road and was edged out by a 3-2 score.

Then on Oct. 23, Head Coach John Parisella’s squad hosted East Haven and claimed a 3-0 victory on Senior Night at North Haven Middle School. Seniors Alex Martins, Derek Mortali, and Philip Skoniezny scored North Haven’s goals in the win.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team gained a split of its last two meets of the regular season. North Haven took a loss to Cheshire and then defeated Jonathan Law in its regular-season finale to finish at 6-5 for the campaign.

North Haven took a 97-77 defeat against Cheshire in a home meet at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Oct. 19. Two days later, North Haven claimed a 102-84 road win over Jonathan Law in a meet at Foran High School.

North Haven will begin postseason competition by participating in the SCC Championship this week. The SCC Diving Championship takes place at Sheehan High School on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 9:30 a.m.; the SCC Swimming Qualifier is at Cheshire Community Pool on Monday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.; and the SCC Swimming Championship will be held at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team won one of its three matches last week and now has a record of 14-4 with one week left in the regular season. North Haven earned a win versus Hillhouse before losing to five-setters against Lyman Hall and Amity in last week’s action.

North Haven started off its week by netting a 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-12) home victory against Hillhouse at Fred Kelly Gymnasium on Oct. 18. Senior Hannah Auddino had 20 assists with four aces, while fellow senior Caroline Toni recorded seven aces and six kills for North Haven. Junior Maren Hill chipped in with seven kills and two aces in the win.

On Oct. 20, North Haven played a road match with Lyman Hall and was edged out by a 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13) score. Auddino had 25 assists with four aces, and Hill posted nine kills for North Haven.

In its last match of the week, North Haven took a 3-2 (25-27, 25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 15-9) defeat versus Amity on the road on Oct. 22. Auddino recorded 31 assists with four digs and four aces. Senior Lexy Signor had 20 digs, while Hill finished the match with 13 kills.

Girls’ Cross Country

The North Haven girls’ cross country team sent six athletes to compete in the SCC Championship at East Shore Park in New Haven on Oct. 20. North Haven finished in 13th place by posting a team score of 266 points at the meet.

Junior Payton Orosco crossed the finish line in 25th place to lead North Haven at the SCC meet. Orosco ran a time of 22:05 on her way to taking 25th place. Freshman Daniella Rapuano came in 47th place with a time of 23:33.

Freshman Amalia Morizio finished in 61st place with a time of 24:13 for North Haven. Freshman Grace DeNardis finished in 72nd place (24:39), senior Riley Minns finished in 91st (26:32), and junior Elisabetta Sposito finished in 105th place (29:03).

North Haven’s next meet is the Class M State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday, Oct. 30. The girls’ race gets underway at 9:45 a.m.

Boys’ Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ cross country squad was represented by seven runners when the SCC Championship took place last week. North Haven finished with a team score of 359 points to finish in 13th place at East Shore Park in New Haven on Oct. 20.

Sophomore Nico Boyle turned in North Haven’s top performance at the SCC Championship. Boyle finished in 47th place by clocking in with a time of 18:29. Junior Tyler Wrum finished in 61st place (18:51), and senior Luke Nugent took 65th place (18:53) in the meet.

Senior Michael Rubano came in 83rd place (19:38) for North Haven at SCCs. Junior Blake Butler finished in 103rd (21:19), sophomore AJ Signore finished in 105th (21:25), and senior Daniyal Saleem finished in 110th place (22:06).

North Haven will be competing at the Class M State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday, Oct. 30. The boys’ race begins at 9:15 a.m.
