The Westbrook girls’ soccer team won two of its last three games of the regular season to finish with an overall record of 6-10 this fall. The Knights collected wins versus Amistad and Harding-Bassick and also took a loss to Hale-Ray in the last week of the regular season.
Westbrook opened the week by taking a 4-2 road loss against Hale-Ray on Oct. 18. The Knights were then awarded a forfeit victory over Amistad for a game that had been scheduled to be played on Oct. 20. On that same day, Westbrook played a home game versus Harding-Bassick and posted a 9-0 shutout. The Knights won four of their last five games overall this season.
Westbrook’s win over Harding-Bassick marked the final high school soccer game for this year’s seniors, who are captains Gianni Salisbury and Alexandra Zanzalari, along with Sadie Susi, Nicole Valiante, and Gabriella Koplas. Salisbury scored the first goal of the game on an assist by junior Mackenzie True. Junior Allison Brajczewski scored Westbrook’s second goal from junior Ava Ciarcia, after which junior Adriana Stranieri scored from Brajczewski to give Westbrook a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Kayla Prisley scored the Knights’ next goal on an assist by Salisbury. Freshman Lily Freeman followed by netting a pair of goals—the first one unassisted and the second on an assist from junior Samantha Sharpe for a 6-0 advantage. After that, freshman Madeleine Valiante scored from sophomore Hannah Freund, and then freshman Ana Dias Heringer scored on an assist by freshman Sydney Young. Zanzalari, who is Westbrook’s goalie, came out of the net to play the field for the Knights and finished off the 9-0 victory by scoring their final goal of the day.
Boys’ Soccer
The Westbrook boys’ soccer squad recorded ties in both of last week’s matchups to put its record at 3-10-2 with one game left in the regular season. The Knights played Hale-Ray and Amistad to stalemates in recent action.
Westbrook began its week by earning a 2-2 tie versus Hale-Ray in a home game on Oct. 19. Two days later, the Knights traveled to New Haven to face Amistad and the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
Field Hockey
The Westbrook-Old Lyme field hockey squad played one game when the Knights faced Old Saybrook on the road last week. The Knights took a 2-0 defeat against the Rams at Old Saybrook High School to move to 4-11 this year.
