The Westbrook girls’ soccer team had a nice week that saw the Knights win two of their three games and record shutouts in both victories. Westbrook earned shutout wins versus Harding-Bassick and North Branford to go with a loss to Old Lyme for an overall record of 3-10 this season.
Westbrook took a 5-0 road loss against Old Lyme in its first game of the week on Oct. 11. However, two days later, the Knights notched their second win of the year when they claimed an 8-0 road victory over Harding-Bassick in Bridgeport.
Junior Adriana Stranieri scored the first three goals for Westbrook in its victory versus Harding-Bassick. Stranieri’s first goal was unassisted, her second goal came off an assist from senior captain Gianni Salisbury, and her third score was assisted by sophomore Kayla Prisley.
Senior Gabriella Koplas scored on an assist by Prisley to make it 4-0, after which junior Gabriela Spash netted a goal for a 5-0 lead. Westbrook’s sixth goal was scored by freshman Giovanna Silva from sophomore Olivia Palumbo, its next goal was scored by freshman Ana Dias Heringer from fellow freshman Sydney Young, and the Knights’ eighth and final goal came off the foot of senior Sadie Susie.
Senior captain goalie Alexandra Zanzalari started the game in net for Westbrook and later came out of the net to play the field and make a contribution on offense.
Then on Oct. 15, Westbrook hosted North Branford and blanked the Thunderbirds by a 4-0 score.
Boys’ Soccer
The Westbrook boys’ soccer team earned its third win of the season when the Knights blanked North Branford last week. Westbrook also took a loss to Old Lyme and has an overall record of 3-10 on the year.
Westbrook hosted Old Lyme on Oct. 12 and dropped a 3-2 decision against the Wildcats. Three days later, the Knights played a road game versus North Branford and notched a 9-0 victory over the Thunderbirds.
Field Hockey
The Westbrook-Old Lyme (W-OL) field hockey team picked up a couple of wins last week by posting 1-0 victories over both Haddam-Killingworth and Morgan. The Knights also took a loss versus Waterford to put their overall record at 4-10 on the campaign.
On Oct. 12, Westbrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and edged out the Cougars by a 1-0 score. Freshman Megan Bache scored the goal for the Knights to propel the team to the victory. Sophomore goalie Abby Demers made two saves to get the shutout.
Then on Oct. 14, W-OL played a home game against Morgan and won that matchup by a 1-0 final. Junior Caroline Dias found the back of the net for the Knights to account for the lone score of the game. Demers stopped four shots for another shutout in goal.
Two days later, W-OL took a 7-2 loss at Waterford in a non-conference contest.
