The Hand girls’ soccer team prevailed in both of its games last week to improve its overall record to 7-2-3 on the season. The Tigers, who are in the first place in the SCC Oronoque Division, earned wins versus Jonathan Law and Branford in last week’s matchups.

Hand opened up the week by earning a 3-1 home win over Law on Senior Night at the Surf Club on Oct 12. Senior Mia Forti scored Hand’s first goal on an assist by fellow senior Abby Leckey. Sophomore Rory Parri netted the second goal off a corner kick from junior Maya Howard. Forti finished off the 3-1 victory when she scored an insurance goal on an assist from junior Maddie Coulis. Senior goalie Brooke Salutari made eight saves for the Tigers.

Three days later, Hand played a road game in Branford and edged out the Hornets by a 2-1 score. After allowing an early goal, the Tigers scored two goals during the second half to walk off the field victorious. Forti scored Hand’s first goal on an assist from Parri. Coulis netted the second score off a deflection by Branford’s goalie to give the Tigers the lead for good. Salutari made six saves in net.

The Hand boys’ soccer team recorded a pair of shutouts last week and is now sporting an overall mark of 10-0-2 on the season.

On Oct. 12, the Tigers earned a 2-0 road win versus Foran. Two days later, Hand hosted Career-Hillhouse and posted a 10-0 shutout at the Surf Club.

The Hand girls’ volleyball squad raised its record to 11-3 after scoring victories in both of last week’s matchups.

In its first match of the week, Hand earned a 3-0 win over Wilbur Cross on the road on Oct. 12. Three days later, the Tigers were back on the road to face a solid North Haven squad and came away with a 3-2 victory in a five-set contest.

The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team notched wins against Jonathan Law and Hamden before losing to SCC powerhouse Cheshire in three recent road meets. Hand is now 6-3 on the year.

On Oct. 8, Hand defeated Jonathan Law by the score of 93-85. The 200 medley relay team of freshman Seorin Kim, freshman Samantha Chemacki, senior Grace Sweeney, and senior Kacie Wines took first place with a time of 2:03.80. Sweeney, Chemacki, and Wines also won two individual events apiece. Sweeney won the 200 freestyle (2:03.66) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.27), Chemacki finished first for the 200 individual medley (2:21.62) and 500 freestyle (5:27.68), and Wines won the 50 freestyle (27.06) and the 100 freestyle (58.75). The 200 freestyle relay of freshman Lillian Miller, Kim, Wines, and Sweeney also topped all finishers with a time of 1:49.69.

Four days later, Hand competed against Hamden and won a 96-77 decision. The Tigers received a victory from their 200 medley relay of sophomore Norah Stotz, junior Julia Urbowicz, sophomore Molly Hoban, and sophomore Haley Wines. Miller won the 200 freestyle, Urbowicz finished first in the 200 IM, and Kacie Wines won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

The following day, Hand took a Cheshire 98-83 loss to Cheshire, but came away with several victories in the meet. The 200 medley relay of Kim, senior Abbi Chemacki, Sweeney, and Kacie Wines out-touched the Cheshire team to clinch the win the event by one one-hundredth of a second with a time of 1:59.79. Samantha Chemacki followed that up by winning the 200 freestyle (2:04.32), while Sweeney swam to a decisive victory in the 100 freestyle (56.67).

The Hand field hockey team moved to 6-5-1-1 on the year after gaining a split of two recent contests. The Tigers lost to Cheshire and then came back to get a win against Sheehan last week.

Hand hosted Cheshire on Oct. 11 and dropped a 1-0 decision against the Rams. Then on Oct. 14, the Tigers traveled to Wallingford to face Sheehan and triumphed by a 2-0 final. Senior Natalia Nolan and fellow senior Ella Scarice scored both of Hand’s goals during the third quarter of its victory versus the Titans.

The Hand boys’ cross country team finished in second place when the Tigers competed at the Wickham Invitational on Oct. 9. The Tigers scored 125 points to take second place among 32 clubs in the medium schools race at Wickham State Park in Manchester.

Senior Jack O’Keefe came in eighth place for the 5K race by running a time of 16:54 for the Tigers. Junior Harrison Grenier finished in 12th place (17:08), senior Danny Hilmer took 17th place (17:27), and junior Nick Montana finished in 20th place (17:31) for Hand.

Sophomore Ty Boucino finished in 69th place (18:47) at the Wickham Invite. Sophomore Jacob Merenda finished in 81st place (19:01), and senior Robert Constable came in 90th place (19:11) for the Tigers.
