The Guilford field hockey team scored a pair of convincing victories last week to improve to 11-1 overall in the 2021 season. The Grizzlies defeated Sheehan and North Haven in last week’s games.
On Oct. 12, Guilford traveled to Wallingford to face Sheehan and posted a 5-0 shutout over the Titans. Senior Maddie Epke had two goals with an assist for the Grizzlies in the win.
Then on Oct. 15, the Grizzlies hosted North Haven and claimed a 10-1 victory at Guilford High School. Epke netted three goals for Guilford on the day. Sophomore Payton Root had a goal with three assists.
Senior Allie Petonito and junior MJ Santa Barbara both scored two goals for the Grizzlies during the week.
Boys’ Soccer
The Guilford boys’ soccer team won both of its matchups in shutout fashion last week to improve its record to 8-2-2 on the season. Guilford earned wins versus North Haven and Lyman Hall in recent action.
The Grizzlies kicked off their week by claiming a 5-0 home victory over North Haven at Bittner Park on Oct. 12. Junior Sami AbuGhazaleh scored two goals and had two assists to lead Guilford to the win. Fellow junior Tyler Yerkes also netted a pair of goals to help the Grizzlies prevail. Sophomore Andres Gutierrez provided the other tally for the Grizzlies.
Three days later, Guilford earned a 1-0 win against Lyman Hall in a road game. Yerkes scored the lone goal of the contest on an assist by AbuGhazaleh with just 33 seconds remaining to lift the Grizzlies to the victory.
Girls’ Soccer
The Guilford girls’ soccer squad played two games last week and split the set to move to 6-3-3 on the campaign.
In its first game of the week, Guilford notched a 1-0 road victory versus East Haven on Oct. 12. Then on Oct. 16, the Grizzlies faced West Haven on the road and lost to the Blue Devils by a 4-3 score.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team collected two more victories last week to run its record to 9-1 on the campaign. The Grizzlies have now won nine-consecutive meets after defeating West Haven and Shelton.
Guilford opened up the week by earning an 84-72 home victory against West Haven at the Soundview Family YMCA on Oct. 11. Three days later, the Grizzlies notched a 93-72 road win versus Shelton at the Shelton Community Center Pool.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Guilford girls’ volleyball squad improved to 8-6 on the season after winning both of its matches last week.
The Grizzlies kicked off their week by earning a 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-7) road victory against Foran at Jonathan Law High School on Oct. 11. Junior Halle Krause posted 10 digs, 10 assists, and four aces in the win. Fellow junior Corinne Puchalski had eight kills and five digs.
Guilford returned to the court for a road match versus West Haven on Oct. 16 and defeated the Blue Devils by a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18) score. Krause had eight kills and six digs in the victory. Sophomore Emma Getrost recorded nine kills with seven digs.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Guilford boys’ cross country team sent seven athletes to compete at the Wickham Invitational on Oct. 8. The Grizzlies finished in seventh place out of 23 teams by scoring 222 points at Wickham State Park in Manchester.
Sophomore Alex Hansen posted the top showing for Guilford by taking 37th place with a time of 17:37. Senior Justin Shiffrin was next line by finishing in 39th place with a mark of 17:42. Junior Michael Massotti came in 49th place by running a time of 17:53.
Junior Ryan Franchi finished in 55th place (18:00) for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Coleman Love finished in 60th place (18:07), junior Bretton Garrick came in 66th place (18:15), and senior Nathan Montgomery finished in 121st place (19:30) for Guilford.
