North Haven Girls’ Volleyball Nets Three More Victories; Girls’ Soccer Earns Win Versus Lyman Hall

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team continued its sparkling start to the 2021 season by winning all three of its matches last week. North Haven posted victories over Shelton, East Haven, and Sheehan to improve its record to 11-1 on the campaign.

North Haven started off its week by earning a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-6) home win versus Shelton on Oct. 4. Senior Caroline Toni recorded 15 digs with 14 kills and seven aces for North Haven. Fellow senior Hannah Auddino had 31 assists to go with 11 digs, seven aces, and two kills. Junior Maren Hill added 13 kills in the win.

Two days later, North Haven claimed a 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 25-15) road victory against East Haven. Auddino had 18 assists with six digs and six aces for North Haven. Junior Kayla Balisiciano notched nine kills and also had six digs on the night.

North Haven closed out its week by claiming a 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 24-26, 25-13) home victory versus Sheehan at Fred Kelly Gymnasium on Oct. 8. Auddino turned in another huge performance by dishing off 31 assists, punching up six digs, and dealing out three aces for North Haven. Toni had a big night in her own right with 16 kills, nine digs, and three aces on her stat line. Freshman Alyssa Ferriouolo chipped in with five digs and five aces for Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s squad.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer team played two games last week and came away the stretch with a win and loss to put its record at 4-5 for the season. North Haven netted a win against Lyman Hall before taking a loss versus Foran in last week’s action.

North Haven kicked off its week by earning a 6-1 victory at Lyman Hall on Oct. 4. North Haven scored two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Sophomore Cameron Ryan netted both of the goals with the first one coming off an assist from junior Lily Coish. Senior goalie Sophia Chagnon made several saves for North Haven during the first half, including one on a Lyman Hall free kick late in the stanza.

Lyman Hall scored a goal in the second half to cut it to 2-1, but North Haven responded by netting four unanswered goals to pull away for the victory. First, senior Ada Forbes scored from Coish to make it 3-1. Later in the half, Coish scored on a Forbes helper for a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore Molly Marottolo scored from Ryan to make it 5-1, after which Forbes scored on an assist by sophomore Rebecca Ford to finish off the 6-1 win. Senior keeper Annalise Moulis played net for North Haven in the second half.

Four days after defeating Lyman Hall, North Haven dropped a 2-0 decision against Foran in a road game.

Boys’ Soccer

The North Haven boys’ soccer team took two defeats last week to move to 2-6-1 on the season.

On Oct. 6, North Haven took a 4-1 road loss to Branford. Two days later, North Haven hosted Amity and lost to the Spartans by a 2-0 score.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming team lost two meets last week to move to 4-3 on the year. North Haven took defeats versus Hand and Amity in last week’s matchups.

In its first meet of the week, North Haven took a 96-87 home loss to Hand at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Oct. 5. Three days later, North Haven had a road meet against Amity and lost to the Spartans by a 99-78 final at High Plains Community Center.

Senior Giulia Faulkner took first place in the 100 backstroke (1:09.79) for North Haven in the Amity meet. Senior El-Lana Coleman finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:00.77), while junior Mikayla Rapuano claimed first for the 100 breaststroke (1:13.65). North Haven’s 400 freestyle relay of senior Abrielle Osborne, junior Alice Scalmani, senior Taya Laborde, and senior Grace Finch also finished in first place (4:20.91).

Field Hockey

The North Haven field hockey team took defeats at home last week and now has a record of 2-5-2-1 on the season. North Haven dropped contests against Branford and Lauralton Hall in recent play.

On Oct. 5, North Haven hosted Branford and took a 3-0 loss to the Hornets. Two days later, Head Coach Kim Bouffard’s squad faced Lauralton Hall at North Haven Middle School and lost the matchup by a 6-2 score.

Sophomore Catherine Bianchi scored both goals for North Haven in the Lauralton Hall game. Senior Noelle Carmody and sophomore Sydney Pitcher each had an assist.

Boys’ Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ cross country team sent seven runners to compete at the Neubauer Invitational at Sheehan High School on Oct. 5. North Haven scored 146 points as a squad to finish in sixth place at the invite.

Sophomore Nico Boyle led the North Haven pack by delivering a 16th-place finish with a time of 19:18.8 for the 5K race. Junior Tyler Wurm finished in 22nd place (19:30.5), and Luke Nugent was right behind by taking 23rd place (19:35.7) for North Haven.

Senior Michael Rubano came in 37th place (20:25.1) at the meet. Junior Blake Butler finished 48th (21:27.1), sophomore AJ Signore took 52nd place (21:37.2), and senior Daniyal Saleem finished in 57th place (22:38.2).

Girls’ Cross Country

The North Haven girls’ cross country squad was represented by six athletes when the Neubauer Invitational took place at Sheehan High School last week. North Haven finished in ninth place at the meet by scoring 206 points.

Junior Payton Orosco crossed the finish line in 20th place by running a time of 23:30.7 for North Haven. Freshman Amalia Morizio clocked in with a time of 24:49.6 to take 32nd place. Senior Riley Minns finished in 44th with a mark of 27:03.5.

Additionally for North Haven, senior Gianna Mele finished in 57th place (31:55.3), sophomore Jade Lewis came in 58th place (32:42.2), and senior Caley Neville finished 59th (33:29.2).
