The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ soccer team improved to 5-4-1 on the season after winning two of its three games last week. The Cougars earned wins over Platt Tech and Westbrook before taking a loss to Old Lyme in recent play.
H-K opened up the week by claiming a 5-0 victory versus Platt Tech in a home game on Oct. 5. Senior Hadley Commerford, sophomore Tu-Lanh Criscuolo, senior Sierra Hajek, senior Brianna Nugent, and senior Yumi Imai scored H-K’s goals in the game. Junior Leah Chester, sophomore Emmy Kehlenbach, and junior Amanda Cassidy had assists for the Cougars. Senior Rhianna Phipps made four saves in goal.
The following day, the Cougars played Westbrook on the road and prevailed by a 5-1 score. Criscuolo had three goals with two assists, while Imai scored a pair of goals to go with two assists in the victory. Kehlenbach and Chester added one assist apiece. Phipps had three saves for H-K.
The day after that, H-K hosted Old Lyme and took a 3-1 defeat to the Wildcats. Criscuolo scored from junior Julia Favalora during the first to put the Cougars up 1-0. However, Old Lyme tied the game with a goal before the break and then scored two goals in the second half to come away with victory. Nugent made seven saves in net in the game.
Boys’ Soccer
The H-K boys’ soccer team picked up a pair of victories last week to boost its record to 6-5-1 for the year. The Cougars defeated both Westbrook and Old Lyme in shutout fashion last week.
H-K kicked off its week by claiming a 3-0 home win over Westbrook on Oct. 5. Two days later, the Cougars played a road game at Old Lyme and edged out the Wildcats by the final score of 1-0.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The H-K girls’ swimming and diving team picked up a recent victory versus Suffield to improve to 3-0 in the 2021 fall season. The Cougars turned in a dominating performance on their way to earning a 95-46 home win versus Suffield at H-K High School on Sept. 29.
H-K held the lead throughout the meet after taking first and third place in the 200 medley relay. The Cougars ultimately recorded 12 personal-best swims on the day.
Freshman Olivia Macaluso qualified for the Class S State Championship after winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.02 for H-K. She also finished first in 50 freestyle. Senior captain Jackie Flaherty improved her qualifying time in the 200 individual medley by finishing in 2:24.02 to take first place. Flaherty also swam to a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a state-qualifying time of 1:03.10.
Junior Erin Marica won the 500 freestyle and also qualified for states in the event by swimming a time of 6:03.65. Junior Aleia Goodison claimed first place in both the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle for H-K.
The Cougars were additionally bolstered by victories from their 200 medley relay of junior Kristen Thebeau, Marica, junior Johanna Houska, and Macaluso; the 200 freestyle relay of Houska, Goodison, freshman Sofia Campo, and senior Jackie Flaherty; and the 400 freestyle relay featuring Macaluso, Goodison, Houska, and Flaherty.
Field Hockey
The H-K field hockey team played one game last week when the Cougars faced Old Saybrook on the road on Oct. 7. H-K took a 4-0 defeat against the Rams to move to 1-7-1-1 on the season.
Football
The Haddam-Killingworth football team traveled to Durham to play a road game versus Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton on Oct. 8. The Cougars took an 18-0 defeat versus the Blue Devils at Coginchaug High School to move to 1-3 on the season.
The Blue Devils held a 6-0 lead at halftime and then returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the H-K 25-yard line, setting up the first of the team’s two touchdowns during the quarter. The Blue Devils added another TD later in the frame and went on to get the 18-0 victory.
H-K has a bye week for this week. The Cougars’ next game is a home contest against North Branford on Friday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
