Branford Girls’ Volleyball, Soccer Sweep Weeks

Girls’ Volleyball

The Branford girls’ volleyball squad continued its torrid play in the 2021 campaign by notching three more victories last week to improve to 10-2. The Hornets defeated East Haven in five sets before posting shutouts versus Career and Hillhouse last week.

Branford started off its week by earning a 3-2 (25-16, 25-21, 24-26, 19-25, 15-9) victory in East Haven on Oct. 4. Senior Marzia Johnson had 24 digs with one kill for the Hornets, while junior Allie Bietz posted 19 assists, 13 aces, 3 digs, and 2 blocks. Junior Paige Kelly had five kills with one block, and sophomore Maddie Lawler added six aces and one block.

Two days later, the Hornets netted a 3-0 (25-4, 25-8, 24-8) sweep versus Career in a home match. Bietz had seven aces with five assists, two kills, and one block for Branford. Lawler recorded seven aces and one block, senior Lily Stockwell served up seven aces, and senior Kayla Krebs had seven assists with one ace.

Branford closed out the week by earning a 3-0 road win over Hillhouse on Oct. 8. Bietz had 15 assists with three aces and one dig, Johnson notched nine digs with eight aces and three kills, and Lawler had seven aces and two blocks.

Girls’ Soccer

The Branford girls’ soccer team improved to 7-2-1 this season by winning both of its games on last week’s slate. The Hornets defeated East Haven and West Haven in recent action.

Branford started off its week by claiming a 6-2 victory in East Haven on Oct. 6. Sophomore Lucy Moran scored two goals for the Hornets, who received one goal apiece from senior Kendall Infantino, junior Ava Ferrie, sophomore Brenna Murphy, and sophomore Raiyn Fries. Ava Ferrie, Morgan, sophomore Tess Ferrie, and sophomore Joelle Budz each had an assist. Senior goalie Macey Girard made seven saves for Branford.

Two days later, the Hornets hosted West Haven and won the matchup by a 4-0 score. Girard recorded her fifth shutout of the year in the victory. Tess Ferrie scored two goals for the Hornets, while senior Ajla Mehmedovic had two assists. Murphy scored off a cross from freshman Bryce Infantino, and Kendall Infantino scored a header off a corner kick from Ava Ferrie.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hornets’ boys’ soccer team enjoyed a nice week on the pitch by claiming victory in two of its three games. Branford posted wins over East Haven and North Haven before losing to Hamden in recent action, improving the team’s record to 3-6-1 on the year.

On Oct. 4, Branford played a road game against East Haven and blanked the Yellowjackets by a 1-0 score. Two days later, the Hornets hosted North Haven and claimed a 4-1 win at Branford High School. Then on Oct. 8, Branford dropped a 5-2 decision to Hamden on the road.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Branford boys’ cross country team hit the course to compete at the Wickham Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 9. The Hornets turned in a solid showing by finishing in ninth place out of 32 teams at the meet.

Senior Peyton Moriarty led the Branford pack by taking 21st place with a time of 17:36 at the Wickham Invitational. Senior Wes Raymond finished in 52nd place (18:31), while fellow senior Pat Zdunek took 55th place (18:35) for the Hornets. Junior Massimo Corrick finished in 93rd place (19:14), junior Colin Donahoe came in 114th place (19:32), and sophomore Sam Coppola finished in 115th place (19:32) for Branford.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Branford girls’ cross country squad sent five athletes to compete at the Wickham Invitational last week. The Hornets came in 18th place among 23 clubs at the invite.

Freshman Peyton Gaudreau ran a time of 23:05 to finish in 56th place for the Hornets at the meet. Junior Hannah Jackson came in 59th place by clocking in with a mark of 23:14. Senior Bella Finta finished in 120th place (26:11), freshman Ella Stone came in 134th place (26:57), and senior Julia Duffy (27:23) finished in 140th place for Branford.
