North Haven Girls’ Volleyball Improves to 8-1; Swim Squad Notches Win Over Hamden

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team improved to 8-1 on the season after winning two of its three matches last week. North Haven recorded shutout victories over Hillhouse and Jonathan Law to go with a loss versus Amity in last week’s action.

North Haven opened up the week by notching a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-12) road win against Hillhouse on Sept. 27. Senior Caroline Toni had six kills with three digs and three aces for North Haven. Junior Maren Hill contributed five kills to the winning effort.

Two days later, North Haven took its first loss of the season when it dropped a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 27-25) decision against Amity in a home match. Senior Hannah Auddino had 29 assists and seven digs, while Toni notched 15 digs with eight aces and seven kills for North Haven. Hill had six kills in the match.

North Haven finished off its week by claiming a 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-17) home win over Jonathan Law on Sept. 30. Toni had 10 digs with 10 aces and six kills to help North Haven emerge victorious. Auddino posted 19 assists with four digs and one ace. Junior Maren Hill recorded five kills in the win.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team picked up its fourth win of the year when it claimed a road victory versus Hamden last week. On Oct. 1, North Haven took on the Green Dragons at North Haven Middle School and won the matchup by the score of 97-79.

Junior Alice Scalmani finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:21.22) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.20) to help North Haven defeat Hamden. Senior Giulia Faulkner took first in the 200 freestyle (2:08.32), while junior Mikayla Rapuano won the 200 freestyle (2:08.32).

North Haven’s 200 medley relay of Rapuano, Scalmani, Faulkner, and senior Taya Laborde finished in first place with a time of 2:02.02. The 200 freestyle relay of Scalmani, Laborde, Faulkner, and Rapuano claimed first place by recording a mark of 1:11.51.

Boys’ Soccer

The North Haven boys’ soccer team picked up three points by earning a victory and a tie in last week’s action. North Haven played East Haven to a draw and then notched a win over Sheehan to improve to 2-5-1 on the year.

On Sept. 28, North Haven faced East Haven on the road and battled the Yellowjackets to a 1-1 tie. Then on Oct. 1, North Haven played a road game versus Sheehan and blanked the Titans by the final score of 2-0.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer squad had two home games last week and split the set to move to 3-4 in the 2021 season. North Haven took a defeat to Branford, but bounced back with a shutout win over West Haven later in the week.

On Sept. 28, North Haven hosted Branford and dropped a 3-1 decision against the Hornets. Senior Ada Forbes scored the lone goal of the game for North Haven.

Then on Oct. 1, North Haven faced West Haven at home and recorded a 3-0 shutout versus the Blue Devils. Forbes headed home North Haven’s first goal of the game on an assist from junior Lily Coish during the first half. Sophomore Rebecca Ford and freshman Alison Palmieri helped set up the goal.

North Haven scored a pair of goals in the second half to take a three-score lead. In the 67th minute, sophomore Cameron Ryan scored from Forbes to increase the lead to 2-0. Then in the 79th minute, Coish and Forbes broke loose for a give-and-go that culminated with Coish finding the back of the net for a 3-0 advantage.

Senior goalie Annalise Moulis played a great game that saw her make several excellent saves to help North Haven prevail. Head Coach Gary Collins added that North Haven also received strong performances from juniors Ilana Blumenthal, Aisling Pretty, and Giavanna Damone; sophomores Molly Marottolo and Anna Mortali; and freshman Andrea August.

Field Hockey

The North Haven field hockey team split a pair of recent matchups by defeating Lyman Hall and taking a loss to Sacred Heart Academy last week. North Haven now has a record of 2-3-2-1.

In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 6-0 defeat against Sacred Heart Academy in a home game on Sept. 27. Two days later, North Haven traveled to Wallingford to face Lyman Hall and won the game by a 3-0 score.

North Haven grabbed a 1-0 lead over Lyman Hall when sophomore Sydney Pitcher scored a goal during the first half. In the third quarter, senior Noelle Carmody scored from fellow senior Hayly Caruso to make it 2-0.

North Haven iced the victory when Pitcher scored from Carmody in the fourth quarter, increasing the team’s lead to 3-0. Sophomore goalie Nola Coyle made seven saves to get the shutout in net.

Boys’ Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ cross country team finished in third place when it competed at the SCC Oronoque Division Championship last week. North Haven scored a total of 78 points to place behind Wilbur Cross (23) and Branford (33) at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Oct. 2.

Sophomore Nico Boyle finished in 10th place for North Haven by running a time of 18:15.90. Junior Tyler Wurm came in 14th place with a time of 19:03.00. Senior Luke Nugent finished in 17th place (19:54.60), sophomore AJ Signore finished 20th (20:19.50), and junior Blake Butler finished in 21st place (20:29.70) at the meet. Senior Daniyal Saleem finished in 23rd place (21:02.10), and junior Tai Moffat finished in 25th (21:18.50) for North Haven.

Girls’ Cross Country

The North Haven girls’ cross country team took second place when the SCC Oronoque Division Championship was held at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Oct. 2. North Haven scored 33 points to finish behind Wilbur Cross (22) at the divisional meet.

Junior Payton Orosco put forth an excellent performance for North Haven finishing in second place for the three-mile race with a time of 22:01.80. Freshman Amalia Morizio took sixth place by crossing the finish line in 23:03.40. Freshman Daniella Rapuano finished in ninth place (23:33.50), freshman Grace DeNardis came in 11th place (24.21.30), and senior Riley Minns took 12th place (24:39.20) for North Haven. Junior Elisabetta Sposito finished in 18th place (27:19.40), and senior Gianna Mele finished in 22nd place (28:34.00).

Football

The North Haven football team hit the road to play a non-conference game against New Canaan on Oct. 1. North Haven took a 21-7 defeat against the Rams at Dunning Stadium and is now 0-4 on the year. New Canaan, which is the No. 3- ranked team in the state, improved to 4-0 with the victory.

The Rams used a 3-yard touchdown pass to jump out to a 7-0 lead over North Haven just two minutes into the game. Senior Matt Dodge got North Haven on the board when he scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to make it 7-6 with 10:05 remaining in the first half. Senior Leo Kattis kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

New Canaan grabbed the lead for good on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 8:52 left in the opening half. The Rams took a 14-7 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

New Canaan scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter. The extra point put the Rams up 21-7, and they were able to win the game by that final after holding North Haven scoreless in the second half.

North Haven is on the bye week this week. North Haven’s next game is at Hamden at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15.
