The Guilford girls’ cross country team posted a convincing first-place finish when the Grizzlies ran in the SCC Hammonasset Division Championship at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Oct. 2. The Grizzlies scored 15 points as a squad to place well ahead of Foran (71), Jonathan Law (73), and Hand (81) on their way to claiming the division title.
Guilford took the top five spots at the Hammonsset Championship. Senior Julia Antony finished first in the three-mile race by running a time of 19:38.80. Fellow senior Olivia Skapczynski earned second place by crossing the finish line with a time of 19:48.90. Junior Alexa Suchy finished in third place (19:55.50), senior Lorelei King came in fourth place (20:50.60), and junior Ursula Adams finished in fifth place (20:58.40) for the Grizzlies. Junior Clara Laughlin finished in eighth place (21:25.30), senior Eliza McCoole came in 11th place (22:30.60), and sophomore Michaela Hogan finished in 12th (22:32.10) for Guilford.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Guilford boys’ cross country team finished in first place when it competed at the SCC Hammonasset Division Championship last week. The Grizzlies posted a team score to place ahead of Hand (43), Foran (68), and Jonathan Law (99) at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Oct. 2.
Junior Michael Massotti finished in third place for the three-mile race by clocking in with a time of 16:36.40 for the Grizzlies. Senior Justin Shiffrin came in fourth place with a time of 16:37.00, and sophomore Coleman Love finished fifth with a mark of 16:37.60. Sophomore Alex Hansen came in sixth place (16:45.90) for Guilford, while junior Bretton Garrick came in 11th place (17:41.40). Junior Ryan Franchi finished in 14th place (18:36.60), and senior Nathan Montgomery finished in 15th (18:39.70).
Field Hockey
The Guilford field hockey team posted three shutout victories last week to improve its record to 7-0 on the season. Guilford earned recent wins versus Lyman Hall, Mercy, and Glastonbury to stay undefeated in the 2021 campaign.
The Grizzlies started up their week by claiming a 7-0 home victory over Lyman Hall on Sept. 28. Two days later, Guilford was on the road to face Mercy and won the contest by the final score of 2-0. Guilford completed its perfect week by earning a 4-0 home win versus Glastonbury on Oct. 2.
Senior goalie Julia McDonald made 23 saves to get the shutout in net when the Grizzlies blanked Glastonbury. Fellow senior Maddie Epke recorded a hat trick in the victory to cap of a week in which she scored seven total goals. Head Coach Kitty Palmer noted that Guilford was bolstered by excellent defensive play from seniors Olivia McDonald and Caroline Kane, as well as juniors Scout Climie, Sami Green, and Delaney Victor throughout the week.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team notched two road wins week to boost its record to 5-1 on the year. The Grizzlies defeated Hamden and Sheehan last week and have now won five meets in a row.
On Sept. 27, Guilford had a road meet with Hamden and claimed a 100-78 victory against the Green Dragons. Three days later, the Grizzlies traveled to Wallingford to face Sheehan and prevailed over the Titans by the score of 104-73.
Boys’ Soccer
The Guilford boys’ soccer team notched a win and a tie last week to improve its record to 6-1-1 this season. The Grizzlies defeated Cheshire before earning a tie versus Hamden in last week’s contests.
Guilford started off its week by claiming a 2-1 victory at Cheshire on Sept. 28. Junior Sami AbuGhazaleh and sophomore Andrew Guiterrez scored the goals for the Grizzlies in the win.
Then on Oct. 1, Guilford hosted Hamden and played the Green Dragons to a 1-1 draw at Bittner Park. Senior Juan Salas-Romer netted a goal for the Grizzlies to give them a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of the game. Hamden tied the game by scoring a goal in the 74th minute, and the two sides settled for the 1-1 draw.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Guilford girls’ volleyball team improved to 5-4 on the season after winning two of its three matches last week. The Grizzlies took a loss to Cheshire, but then bounced back with wins against East Haven and Shelton to make for a nice week overall.
In its first contest of the week, Guilford took a defeat against Cheshire in a home match on Sept. 27. Two days later, the Grizzlies were on the road to face East Haven and swept the Yellowjackets by a 3-0 final.
Guilford finished its week by notching a 3-2 road victory over Shelton on Oct. 1. The Grizzlies took the match in five sets with final scores of 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11. Junior Halle Krause had 18 kills with 14 digs for the Grizzlies. Senior Daisy Pope dished out 34 assists, while sophomore Emma Getrost chipped in with 11 kills and five digs in the win.
