The Guilford football team earned its first win of the year when the Grizzlies claimed a road victory over Pomperaug last week. On Sept. 24, Guilford traveled to Southbury to face Pomperaug for a non-conference game and won the contest by the final score of 21-0.
Guilford and Pomperaug were locked in a scoreless tie at halftime. The Grizzlies scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and then added another TD in the fourth to come away with the win.
Junior Mike O’Brien rushed for a 5-yard touchdown to put Guilford on the board during the third quarter. Later in the frame, O’Brien ran one in from 10 yards out to give the Grizzlies a two-score lead heading into the fourth. Guilford iced the game when sophomore quarterback Tyler Hilgert threw a 15-yard TD pass to senior Eric Dolmus in the final frame.
O’Brien ran 32 times for 147 yards and the two touchdowns in the victory. Senior Eddie Barlage had five carries for 42 yards for Guilford. Hilgert completed 12 of his 23 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Dolmus had eight receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Joe Tafro caught four passes for 43 yards, and junior Liam Alberti had a 10-yard reception. Sophomore Brady Hallihan went 3-for-3 on extra points.
Following a bye week, Guilford will return to action to host East Lyme for a non-conference matchup on Friday, Oct. 8. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Guilford High School.
Boys’ Soccer
The Guilford boys’ soccer team won all three of its matchups last week to improve its record to 5-1 on the season.
On Sept. 20, Guilford hosted Lyman Hall and claimed with a 3-0 victory. Freshman Stephano Jarrin scored the first goal of the game off an assist from junior Luke Ste. Marie. Jarrin then scored an unassisted goal to put the Grizzlies up 2-0 in the 28th minute of the contest. Junior Sean McSweet scored the final goal of the game off an assist from sophomore Andres Gutierrez to cap off the win.
Three days later, Guilford hosted Branford and triumphed by a 1-0 score. Junior Sami AbuGhazaleh scored 13 minutes into the game off a corner kick, and that goal proved the difference in the Grizzlies’ one-goal victory.
Guilford finished its week by earning an 8-0 home win against East Haven on Sept. 25. Gutierrez scored three goals in the win. AbuGhazaleh junior Sean Filley added two goals apiece. Senior Juan Salas-Romer also scored a goal for Guilford.
Girls’ Soccer
The Guilford girls’ soccer team notched a win, took a loss, and earned a draw in last week’s action. The Grizzlies now have a record of 2-2-2 this year.
On Sept. 21, Guilford hosted West Haven and played the Blue Devils to a 1-1 stalemate. Freshman Tea Gambardella scored the Grizzlies’ goal in the game.
Two days later, the Grizzlies played a road game against Sacred Heart Academy and dropped a 1-0 decision.
Then on Sept. 25, Guilford claimed a 4-1 victory at Wilbur Cross. Junior Arianna Tomassi netted three goals for the Grizzlies, whose other goal was scored by Gambardella.
Field Hockey
The Guilford field hockey squad continued its impressive start to the season by posting two more wins last week to improve to 4-0.
On Sept. 21, Guilford traveled to Milford to face Lauralton Hall and claimed a 7-2 victory.
Two days later, the Grizzlies earned a 3-1 win over Hand in Madison. Junior Grace Barlage, junior Ella Clarke, and freshman Payton Root each scored one goal for the Grizzlies in the win.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team had a road meet against Jonathan Law on Sept. 20. The Grizzlies notched a 100-84 victory versus Law to boost their record to 2-1 on the season.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Guilford girls’ cross country team competed against Lauralton Hall and Shelton in a home meet at the East River Preserve on Sept. 21. The Grizzlies improved to 7-1 this fall by earning wins versus both teams at the meet.
Guilford posted a score of 18 points as a team on its way to topping Shelton (60) and Lauralton Hall (60). Senior Julia Antony finished in first place with a time of 18:20 for the Grizzlies. Senior Olivia Skapczynski took second place by timing in with a mark of 18:53. Junior Alexa Suchy finished in fourth place (19:12), senior Lorelei King took fifth place (20:21), and junior Ursula Adams (21:07) claimed sixth place to round out Guilford’s scoring for the day.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Guilford boys’ cross country team hosted a tri-meet against Fairfield Prep and Shelton last week. The Grizzlies defeated both teams at the East River Preserve on Sept. 21 to improve their record to 6-2 this year.
Guilford finished with a team score of 26 points to defeat Shelton (39) and Fairfield Prep (69) at last week’s meet. Senior Justin Shiffrin came in second place overall by running a time of 16:15 for Guilford. Shiffrin was followed across the finish line by sophomore Coleman Love in third place (16:16), junior Michael Massotti in fourth place (16:17), sophomore Alex Hansen in sixth place (16:33), and junior Ryan Franchi in 11th place (17:05).
