North Haven Girls’ Volleyball Improves to 6-0; Both Soccer Squads Notch Victories

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team continued its stellar start to the 2021 season by winning both of its matches in last week’s action. North Haven posted a shutout versus Mercy and then blanked Hand to boost its record to 6-0 on the year.

North Haven kicked off its week by earning a 3-0 home victory against Mercy on Sept. 20. Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s team swept the Tigers by the final tally of 25-22, 25-8, 25-15 at North Haven High School.

Senior Hannah Auddino dished off 20 assists to go five digs and one ace for North Haven in the win. Fellow senior Caroline Toni had eight kills with six digs and three aces. Junior Maren Hill recorded seven kills to help North Haven sweep the match.

Three days later, North Haven played a road match versus Hand and claimed a 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-16) win against the Tigers. Auddino had 24 assists with four digs and four aces for North Haven. Junior Kayla Balisciano posted eight kills with six digs and one ace, while sophomore Avery Berney added six kills for Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s club.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer squad had two games last week when the team hosted Lauralton Hall and then faced Hamden on the road. North Haven took a loss to Lauralton Hall and defeated Hamden to move to 2-3 on the season.

On Sept. 20, North Haven played a home game versus Lauralton Hall and took a 5-0 defeat at North Haven Middle School. Then on Sept. 25, North Haven was on the road to play Hamden and claimed a 4-1 win versus the Green Dragons.

North Haven grabbed a quick lead 1-0 over Hamden when sophomore Anna Mortali scored on an assist from junior Lily Coish in the 3rd minute of the game. Mortali netted an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute to make it 2-0. Hamden came back with a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 at halftime.

Senior Ada Forbes netted a goal in the 67th minute of the game to increase North Haven’s lead to 3-1. Seven minutes later, Forbes found the back of the net again to give North Haven a 4-1 advantage.

Senior goalie Annalise Moulis made seven saves in net for North Haven, which outshot Hamden 18-11. Head Coach Gary Collins noted that junior Aisling Pretty, junior Samantha Adams, junior Ilana Blumenthal, and freshman Hannah Bernardo played fantastic games on defense in the victory. Collins also said that North Haven was bolstered by strong performances from sophomore Cameron Ryan and freshman Olivia Coish at the center midfield position, sophomore Rebecca Ford and sophomore Molly Marottolo at outside mid, and freshman Andrea August at forward.

Boys’ Soccer

The North Haven boys’ soccer team earned its first win with Head Coach John Parisella when it defeated Lyman Hall last week. North Haven also took losses against West Haven and Cheshire to put its record at 1-3 for the year.

In tis first game of the week, North Haven dropped a 5-3 decision at West Haven on Sept. 21. West Haven scored the first two goals of the game to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Jack Pollard scored a goal for North Haven in the 33rd minute to make it 2-1 at halftime and then netted a second score in the 54th minute to knot the game at 2.

West Haven scored a goal in the 71st minute and another goal in the 74th minute to grab a 4-2 advantage. Senior Zion Teclechiel scored on a penalty kick one minute later to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Blue Devils netted an insurance goal in the 78th minute and went on to get the 5-3 victory.

Two days later, North Haven was back on the road to face Cheshire and took a 6-1 loss versus the Rams. Then on Sept. 25, North Haven faced Lyman Hall at home and posted a 1-0 shutout to pick up first win of the campaign and its first victory with Coach Parisella.

Boys’ Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ cross country team hosted three opponents for a quad-meet at Wharton Brook State Park on Sept. 21. North Haven claimed one victory and took two defeats to put its record at 1-5 on the season.

North Haven competed against Hamden, Foran, and Sheehan at last week’s meet. North Haven totaled a team score of 53 points to earn a win versus Hamden (88) and drop contests to Foran (45) and Sheehan (46).

Field Hockey

The North Haven field hockey team played two games last week and gained a point in the standings by earning a tie. North Haven lost to Shelton and then came back to tie Hamden. The team now has a record of 1-2-2-1.

On Sept. 21, North Haven hosted Shelton and was edged out by a 1-0 final at North Haven Middle School. Then on Sept. 24, North Haven was on the road to face Hamden and earned a 2-2 draw with the Green Dragons.

Sophomore Catherine Bianchi scored both goals for North Haven in the Hamden game. Bianchi’s first goal came off an assist from senior Hayly Caruso, and her second score was assisted by senior Noelle Carmody and senior Juliana DeAngelo.

Football

The North Haven football squad hit the road to play a non-conference game versus Wilton on Sept. 25. North Haven took a 28-7 defeat against Wilton and is now 0-3 on the season.

Wilton scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. Wilton then scored one TD in the third quarter and another in the fourth for a 28-0 advantage. North Haven got on the board when sophomore Adam Pandolfi rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 2:46 to play in the game. Senior Leo Kattis kicked the extra point for North Haven.

Pandolfi had 14 carries for 51 yards in the game. Senior Matt Dodge ran 10 times for 59 yards, while fellow senior Jake Langer had 42 yards on nine rushes.

On defense, junior Brian Lastomirsky forced a fumble, and senior Matt Cocco had a fumble recovery for North Haven.

North Haven will play another non-conference game when the team faces New Canaan on the road this week. The contest kicks off at 7 p.m. at Dunning Stadium in New Canaan.
