Hand Field Hockey Takes 2 of 3 in First Week; Boys’ Soccer Notches a Pair of Shutouts

Field Hockey

The Hand field hockey team is off to a strong start to its season after winning two of its three games during the opening week of play. The Tigers notched shutouts against Shelton and Mercy and then lost to Glastonbury for a 2-1 start to their campaign.

Hand began its campaign by hosting Shelton at the Surf Club on Sept. 14. The Tigers blanked the Gaels by a 5-0 score to take their season opener.

Two days later, Hand played a home game versus Mercy and claimed a 6-0 victory. Senior Natalia Nolan two goals for the Tigers in the victory. Senior Reilly Dolan, senior Riley Kilbourn, junior Grace Barrett, and sophomore Jordan Kells added one goal apiece for Head Coach Sue Leckey’s squad.

Sophomore Kelly Kilbourn had an assist for Hand in the win. Senior Alanna Fay, Kelly Kilbourn, Dolan, Nolan, and Kells also contributed assists for the Tigers.

On Sept. 18, Hand played a non-conference game against Glastonbury and took a 3-1 defeat.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hand boys’ soccer team earned victories in both of its games in last week’s action. Hand posted shutouts over Shelton and Foran to improve its record to 3-0 on the year.

The Tigers started their week by claiming a 6-0 home victory versus Shelton at the Surf Club on Sept. 14. The following day, Hand hosted Foran and blanked the Tigers that same 6-0 final.

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team played two contests last week and came away with a win and a draw to improve to 2-0-1 this season. The Tigers tied Guilford and then defeated Jonathan Law in their recent games.

On Sept. 14, Hand played a road game against Guilford and battled the Grizzlies to a 0-0 tie at Bittner Park. Four days later, the Tigers were on the road to face Jonathan Law and won the game by the final score of 9-2.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Hand girls’ volleyball squad split a pair of road matchups last week and is now 3-1 on the year. The Tigers took a loss to Jonathan Law, but then came back to defeat Lyman Hall later in the week.

In its first match of the week, Hand took a 3-0 defeat at Jonathan Law on Sept. 15. Two days later, the Tigers traveled to Wallingford to face Lyman Hall and won the contest by a 3-1 score.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Hand boys’ cross country team opened its season by competing in a quad-meet at Wharton Brook State Park on Sept. 14. The Tigers swept the meet by posting a team score of 16 to defeat West Haven (59), Lyman Hall (62), and East Haven (no team score).

Girls’ Cross Country

The Hand girls’ cross country squad took the trails at Wharton Brook Park for its first meet of the season last week. The Tigers recorded a score of 34 to take a loss to Lyman Hall (23) and notch wins versus West Haven (no team score) and East Haven (no team score) at the meet on Sept. 14.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team kicked off its season by facing Lyman Hall on the road last week. The Tigers took a 100-85 loss to Lyman Hall at Sheehan High School on Sept. 14.
