The Valley Regional field hockey team looks great so far this season. After earning wins over North Branford and East Lyme the first week of the season, the Warriors added two more wins this week to move to a 4-0 record in the early-goings of the 2021 campaign.
On Sept. 13, Valley hosted Haddam-Killingworth and picked up a dominant 8-0 win over the Cougars.
On Sept. 18, the Warriors played a home contest against East Lyme and came away with a 4-0 win over the Vikings.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Warriors played a pair of games last week and came away with wins in both contests. So far this year Valley has yet to lose with a 3-0 record on the season.
On Sept. 13, the Warriors headed to Waterford where they claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over the Lancers. Waterford took the first set by a score of 25-15, but Valley knotted up the contest with a 25-19 second set. The Warriors continued their momentum with a 28-26 win in the third set, but the Lancers made it 2-2 with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Valley secured victory with a 15-9 win in the final set of the match.
Senior Madison Neviaser provided nine kills, seven aces, and 18 digs, while junior Kaia Karcich had two kills, five aces, 15 digs, and 34 receptions. Junior Sophie Scrivo provided 24 assists, eight digs, a block, three kills, and two aces. Senior Salmi Miller had four kills, an ace, eight digs, and 14 receptions, while fellow senior Ella Pitman had four digs, three aces, seven digs, and an assist. Junior Audrey board added four kills, three aces, a block, and three digs. Senior Emi Bisson had 11 digs and nine receptions, and Chase Conrad had a kill, two aces, and three digs.
On Sept. 17, the Warriors notched a 3-0 shutout win at home versus Morgan.
Boys’ Soccer
The Valley Regional boys’ soccer squad played a pair of games last week and came away with a split of on the two games. With these results, Head Coach Mick Fearon’s team’s record moved to 2-1 on the season.
On Sept. 13, the Warriors hosted Westbrook and claimed an 8-0 home win over the Knights. Valley scored early and often, notching seven goals within the first 35 minutes of the game.
Seven minutes into the game, senior Jorge Lanza Duron put a ball into the back of the net off an assist from fellow senior Jake Burdick. Two minutes later, Burdick earned a goal off a Lanza Duron assist. Junior Michael Kollmer scored Valley’s next goal off another assist from Burdick bringing the score to 3-0.
Burdick scored an unassisted goal next. Senior captain Tucker Burr added a goal off an assist from Jake McKenna. The next Valley goal came from McKenna, who scored on an assist by Burr, and the two connected for another goal soon after that to make it 7-0.
Valley’s final goal came from sophomore Tyler Ruel on an assist from senior Simon Partyka.
On Sept. 18, Valley took a narrow 1-0 defeat at home against Morgan. The Warriors created some good chances but weren’t take advantage of them. Morgan’s best chance of the first half ended up being its lone goal of the game.
Valley had a corner at the very end of the game, but Morgan’s keeper got his hand on the ball and knocked it away from McKenna, who was in a prime position to tie the game.
Football
The Warriors headed to Durham last week to take on Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton, and they took a 14-0 loss in the road contest. The loss drops the Warriors’ record to 1-1 on the young season.
The Blue Devils scored in the first quarter on an interception that was run into the end zone to make it 6-0. That score would hold through the first half. At the end of the third quarter, got an offensive touchdown and were successful on the two-point conversion.
Valley Regional-Old Lyme have a bye next week, and the team’s next game will be at Peters Complex in Clinton where the Warriors will take on Morgan.
