The Morgan football team grabbed their first win of the season last week. On Sept. 17, the Huskies scored a 36-22 road victory against Haddam-Killingworth, and that win helped Head Coach Kevin Sullivan’s team improve to a 1-1 record on the year.

The Huskies recorded the victory thanks in large part to the passing display put on by Drew Nye, who was 22 of 34 with 287 yards with five touchdowns. Nye also added 42 yards on the ground. Receiver Alex Fratamico caught seven of those Nye passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

Huskies got on top with a score in the first quarter. After making a long drive down the field, Ethan Ranaudo scored on a quick pass in the end zone from Nye. Fratamico caught the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.

Haddam-Killingworth went three and out on the next possession, and during the punt, Nino Cimino deflected the kick. Morgan ended up with the ball around midfield. The Huskies fed the ball to sophomore running back Casey Corrigan to reach the red zone, and Nye hit Fratamico for another touchdown that made it 14-0.

A couple of possession later, H-K scored and made it 14-7 with a successful point-after attempt. The Huskies got back into the end zone before the end of the half thanks another Nye-Ranaudo connection to make it 22-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cougars narrowed the gap a bit with a touchdown and PAT to make it 22-14.

After that score, Morgan went to work on a long, time-consuming drive that resulted in another touchdown pass from Nye to Fratamico, and a successful two-point conversion made it 30-14.

The Huskies would make it 36-14 when Nye threw the ball to Garret Garbinski for a 10-yard touchdown with not much time left in the fourth quarter. H-K would score a TD in waning minutes to make it the 36-22 final.

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer squad completed their second week of the season with wins against a pair of Shoreline Conference foes in Hale-Ray and Valley Regional. With these victories, Head Coach Ross Demay’s squad moved to a 4-0 record on the season.

On Sept. 14, the Huskies were on the road against Hale-Ray, and they posted a 2-0 victory over the Noises. Morgan had difficulty with getting their usual control of the ball with the condition of the field. It was an up-and-down first half, and Morgan had its first solid chance when Sebastian Kadlof found Matt Lopez in prime position, however the ball hit a divot, got stuck under Lopez’s foot, and the Noises’ defense recovered in time. In the 25th minute, Kadlof scored an unassisted goal when he stole a defensive header, broke through two defenders, faked out a third, and put the ball past the keeper and into the side netting. Hale-Ray came right back 30 seconds later with a great chance but Morgan keeper Bailey Goss made a great save.

Morgan appeared in control in the second half, but with only a single goal advantage, anything could still happen. In the 71st minute, Steven Kinser found the goal off a punt from Goss and solidified the Huskies’ victory. The ball bounced over the last defender and gave Kinser a one-on-one against the keeper, whom he beat. The win marked Head Ross Demay’s 100th victory with the Morgan program.

On Sept. 18, the Huskies played another close game and pulled out a 1-0 road win against Valley Regional. The Huskies were without Kadlof and Lopez but took the field on a mission. Valley almost broke through in the 19th minute, but the goal was called back for offsides.

Morgan struck with nine minutes left in the first with a transition goal by Kinser off a through-ball from Tyler Mucha. Valley battled and the Morgan defense worked hard keeping the ball out of the net the rest of the way.
