Westbrook-Old Lyme Field Hockey Wins Season Opener; Boys’ Soccer Gains a Split


Field Hockey

The Westbrook-Old Lyme field hockey squad began its first year as a co-operative club with a resounding victory last week. The Knights hosted Norwich Free Academy on Sept. 11 and grabbed a 5-0 home victory against the Lancers. With the win, the Knights are off to a 1-0 start on the campaign.

Kylie Dishaw scored a pair of goals for the Knights, and Caroline Dias notched a pair of assists. Delaney Belcourt also had two goals to her credit, while Mayte Calle Churai added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Boys’ Soccer

The Westbrook boys soccer squad played a pair of games last week to begin its 2021 campaign. The Knights came away with a win and a loss to start the year with a 1-1 record.

On Sept. 10, Westbrook headed to Durham to take on Coginchaug. The Knights took a narrow 1-0 road loss to the Blue Devils. Westbrook hung with Coginchaug through the first half, but the Blue Devils took the lead in the second with a goal in the 61st minute.

The next day, Westbrook hosted Amistad and claimed a 3-0 win against the Academics. Westbrook got the scoring started at the 10-minute mark with a goal from Jonathan Bremeo off and assist from Grant Liberson. The Knights took a 1-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, Westbrook saw another goal from Bremeo in the fiftieth minute, this time unassisted. The Knights final goal of the game came just five minutes later when Jacob Perrault scored off an assist from Bremeo.

Girls’ Soccer

Westbrook had just a single game on the slate last week, and the Knights began the year with a tough loss against Coginchaug. Westbrook hosted Coginchaug and took a 9-0 loss against the Blue Devils. The loss puts the Knights’ record at 0-1 on the year.
