Waters Sets Record for Most Wins with No. 556; Rams’ Football Plays First Game in Two Years

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer squad earned its first win of the season with a 3-1 road victory over East Hampton on Sept. 10. That win marked Head Coach Steve Waters’s 566th win of his career as a head coach, making him the winningest Connecticut boys’ soccer head coach in state history and passing former E.O. Smith head coach John Blomstrann.

In last year’s COVID-shortened season, the Rams were on the precipice of completing Waters’s 566th win in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, but lost to East Hampton in the semifinals. Even though it took a while, Waters moved his own head coaching mark to a record of 566-92-51, which is nearly an 80-percent win rate.

The Rams propelled Waters to the rarefied air of 566 wins thanks to a dominating performance. Old Saybrook posted the game’s first goal on a shot from sophomore Kevin DeCapua in the first half for a 1-0 advantage. That mark would remain until halftime, and in the second half, junior captain striker Cameron DeAngelo stung a pair of goals into the back of the net to make it 3-0. East Hampton would add a goal late in the game to bring the score to a 3-1 final.

The Rams moved to 1-0 to open the 2021 campaign.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams got off on the right foot in 2021 with an opening-day victory last week. Old Saybrook hosted East Hampton to start the season and moved to 1-0 on the year.

On Sept. 9, the Rams trounced the Bellringers in a 6-0 home win.

Field Hockey

The Old Saybrook field hockey squad opened the 2021 season with a pair of victories last week. The Rams defeated Waterford and Morgan to get off to a 2-0 start.

On Sept. 10, the Rams hosted Waterford and scored a 4-0 victory. The next day, Old Saybrook scored a 1-0 home win against Morgan.

Football

Last week, the Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football squad played its first game since 2019. The Rams took a 27-22 road loss against Haddam-Killingworth (H-K), but even in defeat OS-W got a victory in getting back on the gridiron.

Things looked bleak for the Rams at the outset of the game when H-K returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and after a successful extra point, OS-W was playing from a 7-0 deficit. By the end of the first half, the Cougars had a 21-0 lead.

In the second half, the Rams opened with a strong drive down the field and punched it into the end zone to make it 21-6. On the next possession for the Cougars, the Rams were able to force a fumble and recover it near H-K’s 40-yard line. OS-W completed another drive down the field and scored another touchdown. The Rams made it 21-14 with a successful two-point conversion.

Both teams would battle back and forth with defensive stops for the rest of the third quarter. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Rams mounted another long drive to the 2-yard line. After an illegal formation penalty, the Rams were still able to run the ball into the end zone, and with another 2-point conversion took their first lead of the game at 22-21.

Unfortunately, OS-W was spent after the huge comeback, and was unable to halt the Cougars final push. H-K scored one final touchdown to make it 27-22, defeating the Rams.
