Valley Field Hockey Storms Out to 2-0 Start; Girls’ Volleyball Earns First Win with Cullina


Field Hockey

The Valley Regional field hockey squad recorded a pair of wins to open up the 2021 season. The Warriors played against North Branford and Waterford last week and came away with wins against both squad for a 2-0 start. The Warriors’ win against North Branford marked the first time in Head Coach Beth McCabe Powers earned a win over the Thunderbirds.

On Sept. 10, Valley hosted North Branford and claimed a narrow 1-0 victory against the Thunderbirds. Valley’s lone goal was scored by Clara Shea.

The next day, Waterford was in town, and the Warriors notched a 4-0 win against the Lancers.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Warriors grabbed their first win of the year this past week and are 1-0 to start the 2021 campaign. Valley hosted Old Lyme on Sept. 9 and claimed a 3-1 home win over the Wildcats, marking the first win for new Head Coach Sofia Cullina and new Assistant Coach Katie Cullina.

The Warriors won the first set by a score of 25-18, and they took the second set by a score of 25-19. Old Lyme took the third set by a 25-15 mark, but the Warriors rebounded and put the game away with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

Boys’ Soccer

The Warriors opened the season on the road this past week and earned a victory in the contest. With a 1-0 record to begin the year, Valley is already looking pretty strong to start the season.

On Sept. 11, the Warriors headed to Rockville and recorded a 5-2 road victory over the Rams.

Tucker Burr opened the scoring attack for the Warriors with a goal at the 15-minute mark off an assist from Michael Kollmer. Three minutes later, that same tandem connected on another goal to make it 2-0. In the 24th minute, Jake Burdick scored an unassisted goal.

Rockville mounted a comeback scoring two goals in relatively quick succession in the second half in the 49th and 54th minutes. Five minutes after the Rams’ second score, Kollmer added a goal on an assist from Jake McKenna. Two minutes later, McKenna put the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Simon Partyka.

Girls’ Soccer

The Warriors earned their first win of the season last week and are off to a solid start to the year. Valley grabbed a 6-1 road win against Hale-Ray on Sept. 10. The Warriors moved to 1-0 in the early stages of the 2021 season.
