The Hand girls’ volleyball team kicked off its fall season by earning a pair of road victories last week. The Tigers defeated Guilford and Waterford to start their year with a record of 2-0.

On Sept. 9, Hand hosted Guilford for its season opener and took the match by a 3-1 score. Hand won the first set 25-21 and then took the second set by a 25-15 score to go up 2-0. Guilford claimed a 25-19 victory in the third set, but the Tigers won the fourth set 25-16 to solidify the 3-1 win.

Two days later, Hand hit the road to face Waterford for a non-conference contest. The Tigers notched a 3-1 win versus Waterford to collect their second victory of the week.

Ally Johnson is back for another season as Hand’s head coach. Last year, Hand went 5-8 and lost to East Haven in the semifinals of the SCC Division C Tournament.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hand boys’ soccer squad played its first game with new Head Coach Neil Phillips when the team hosted Conard for its season opener last week. The Tigers picked up their first victory with Coach Phillips by winning the contest at the Surf Club.

Hand started off its 2021 campaign when it played a home game against Conard on Sept. 9. Coach Phillips’s squad claimed a 3-1 win versus Conard in the non-conference contest.

Phillips takes over for Greg Cumpstone, who coached the Tigers to an 11-0 record and the SCC Division B title last year. Hand enters this season having won four-consecutive Class L state championships.

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team began its season on a positive note last week. The Tigers claimed a road victory over Brookfield in their 2021 opener.

Hand was on the road to face Brookfield for its first game of the year on Sept. 11. Head Coach Rob McConville’s squad defeated Brookfield by the final score of 4-2 in a non-conference matchup.

Hand is coming off of a season that saw the Tigers post a record of 5-4-2 and compete in the SCC Division B Tournament.
