Morgan Football Back on the Field; Girls’ Soccer Notches Tie with Old Lyme

Football

The Morgan football team took the field for the first time since 2019 on Sept. 10. The Huskies dropped a 36-8 loss against Cromwell-Portland in their home opener. Still, Morgan showed heart after falling behind early, and regardless of the outcome, being on the field for the first time in nearly two years was encouraging for the Huskies.

The Panthers got out to an early 7-0 with their first drive of the game. The rest of the first quarter went by without another score, but in the second quarter, Cromwell-Portland scored another touchdown and made the PAT to move the score to 14-0.

The highlight of Morgan’s offense came in the second when the Huskies drove down the field and scored a touchdown to narrow the Panther’s lead. The big play came on the Huskies’ fourth down when Andrew Nye connected with Garret Garbinski for a 30-yard pass play for a touchdown. Morgan was unsuccessful in the 2-point conversion, and the score stood at 14-6.

The Panthers managed to score again in the waning seconds of the first half to make it 21-6 heading into the break.

At the beginning of the second half, the Panthers snagged a pick-6, and then scored on a 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 29-6. The Panthers would score another touchdown and PAT in the fourth quarter to make it 36-6. The Huskies got it to 36-8 after a strange play where a Panthers’ snap flew past the punter and behind the end zone.

Nye threw for 155 yards and a touchdown. Garbinski hauled in five receptions for 99 yards, while Alex Fratamico caught five passes for 41 yards.

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer squad had to wait an extra day to get its season started after the rain washed out the Huskies originally scheduled battle with Old Lyme on Sept. 9. Morgan and the Wildcats met up on Sept. 10 and the teams played to a 1-1 tie. The Huskies open the season at 0-0-1.

Neither team could get its offense over the hump in the first half. Each squad played staunch defense, and Old Lyme was the first on the board in the 55th minute of the game. The Huskies’ Caeley Ayer knotted the score at 1-1 on an assist from Kate Martin 10 minutes after the Wildcats took the lead.

Morgan was out shot by Old Lyme 8-7, but goalie Angelina Comiskey stood tall in net to help preserve the tie.

Field Hockey

The Huskies played two games last week and split the pair to move to 1-1 at the season’s outset. Morgan began the season with a solid 2-0 home win versus Haddam-Killingworth on Sept. 10. The next day, the Huskies dropped a narrow 1-0 road defeat to Old Saybrook.
