Guilford’s Cross Country Teams Start Season with Sweeps

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country squad welcomed three teams to the East River Preserve for a season-opening quad-meet last week. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 3-0 start to their season by claiming victory against each opponent at the meet.

On Sept. 9, Guilford hosted a quad-meet and came away with a sweep. The Grizzlies posted a team score of 22 points to earn wins versus Amity (58), Sacred Heart Academy (62), and Wilbur Cross (96) and sweep the meet.

Senior Julia Antony finished in first place overall for the race by clocking in with a time of 18:07 for Guilford. Senior Olivia Skapczynski took third place (19:00), and junior Alexa Suchy finished in fifth (19:37). Senior Lorelei King claimed sixth place (19:58), while junior Clara Laughlin finished seventh (20:04) on behalf of Head Coach Jim Ford’s team.

Guilford took first place at the SCC Division A Championship and also finished first in the SCC Championship last year.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Guilford boys’ cross country team started off its season by hosting a quad-meet on Sept. 9. The Grizzlies swept the meet by defeating all three of their opponents at the East River Preserve.

Guilford tallied a team total of 38 points to claim victories over Amity (49), Wilbur Cross (61), and Notre Dame-West Haven (66) at last week’s meet. The Grizzlies opened their year with a 3-0 record as a result.

Sophomore Coleman Love ran a time of 16:16 to finish in fourth place overall for the race. Junior Michael Massotti finished fifth (16:25), and senior Justin Shiffrin came in sixth place (16:26) for Head Coach Jon Rivera’s squad.

Last season, Guilford finished in first place at the SCC Division A Championship and took second place for the SCC Championship.

Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team hit the road to face Stonington for its first game of the fall season. The Grizzlies won the contest by a goal to start their year on a positive note.

On Sept. 10, Guilford played a road game versus Stonington in its 2021 opener. Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s squad edged out Stonington by the final score of 3-2 in the non-conference matchup.

Guilford is coming off of a season that saw the team finish with an overall record of 13-1-0-1 and win the SCC Division A title. The Grizzlies claimed a 5-1 victory versus Cheshire in the divisional final.

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer team hit the pitch to face Stratford for its season opener last week. The Grizzlies were victorious in the non-conference contest at Bittner Park.

Guilford hosted Stratford for its first game of the 2021 season on Sept. 11. Guilford notched a 3-1 victory over Stratford to jump out to a 1-0 start to the year.

Guilford and Stratford were tied 1-1 at halftime before the Grizzlies scored the last two goals of the game in the latter stanza. Senior Cal Stephens scored two goals for the Grizzlies, including one on a penalty kick, and also had an assist. Junior Will Rice scored Guilford’s other goal in the victory, while senior Theo Freeman had an assist.

Curtis Gullette is back for another season as the Grizzlies’ head coach. In 2020, Guilford went 7-3-1 and advanced to the SCC Division B final, where the team took a loss to Hand.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer squad began its fall campaign by playing a road game versus Cheshire last week. Guilford dropped the contest against Cheshire in its season opener.

On Sept. 9, the Grizzlies traveled to Cheshire to take on the Rams for their first game of the season. The Rams defeated Guilford by the final score of 2-0 at Cheshire High School.

Guilford enters its second year with Head Coach Regina Sullivan. Last season, the Grizzlies posted a mark of 8-1-3 and claimed the SCC Division B crown with a 1-0 overtime win against Branford in the tournament final.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Guilford girls’ volleyball team hosted Hand for its first match of the year last week. On Sept. 9, the Grizzlies played Hand and took a 3-1 defeat at Guilford High School.

Hand won the first set 25-21 and then took the second set by a 25-15 score to go up 2-0 over Guilford. The Grizzlies claimed a 25-19 victory in the third set, but the Tigers won the fourth set 25-16 to solidify the 3-1 win.

Senior Daisy Pope handed out 19 assists for the Grizzlies versus Hand. Junior Halle Krause had 12 kills in the contest.

Guilford enters its first season with Marisa Ceneri as head coach. Ceneri is taking over for Laura Anastasio, who coached the team to much success during the past several seasons. Last year, the Grizzlies went 14-0 and won the SCC Division C title with a 3-0 victory against East Haven in the championship match of the division tournament.
