Playoff Picture Grows Clearer in Final Weeks of DRHL

The Deep River Horseshoe League (DRHL) is closing in on the end of the regular season, and postseason contests have been scheduled. The first round begins on Thursday, Aug. 26, and with only a scant few games left to jockey for position several teams are making their final playoff push.

The Reds maintained their top spot in the standings and extended their lead by a half game with a 4.5-1.5 win over the Orioles in Week 14. Reds' Division B player Andy Perna, who lives in Chester, took the top spot among the B's with a tally of 113 for his series. The Dodgers remain in second place with after winning a 4-2 decision over the Mets. For third through eighth place, there was a bunch of shuffling.

The Marlins jumped into third place from fifth after triumphing in a 4.5-1.5 match against the Braves, who dropped to fourth place. The Marlins poured on the points with Division A player Mark Goodale, who lives in Clinton, leading all A players with a series high of 163, Division B Player Gerald Hines, who lives in Higganum, scoring 111 which was second-best among the B's, and C player Karen Perna, who lives in Chester, leading all C's with a score of 87.

The Yankees continued to climb the standings and earned a tie for fourth place beating the Angels in a 4-2 match in that caused the Halos to slip to sixth. The Red Sox moved up with a 3-3 tie in their series against the White Sox. The Red Sox hold just a half-game lead over the Pirates in eighth place. The Pirates battled the Cardinals and lost a 4-2 decision. Kris Toohey (Westbrook) had a breakout night scoring 138, which was good for third best among the A's. Sheryl Serviss (Deep River) was second among the Division C players with a score of 85.

Mike Zanelli, Sr. (Haddam) had the second highest tally in the A Division with a score of 152. Anthony Malerba claimed the third highest score in the B Division at 110, and Scot Allen, Jr. (Deep River) scored 84, which earned third best among C players.

The Deep River Horse League standings shook out as follows: Reds (58-26), Dodgers (51.5-32.5), Marlins (47.5-36.5), Braves (46-38), Yankees (46-38), Angels (45.5-38.5), Red Sox (45-39), Pirates (44.5-39.5), Tigers (44-40), Cards (43-41), Rangers (42-42), Royals (42-42), Cubs (39-45), Padres (39-45), Giants (33.5-50.5), Orioles (31.5-52.5), Mets (30.5-53.5), White Sox (30.5-53.5).

The Deep River Horseshoe League has 18 teams that feature three players of each of the A, B, and C divisions. The league plays every Thursday night on the First Congregational Green in Deep River and welcomes anyone to come watch its contests. For info, visit deepriverhorseshoes.com.
