Huskies Pack in Several Games on the Ballfield


The Clinton Huskies played picked a couple of wins in East Shore AAU 17-U Travel Baseball League action last week. Prior to that, the Huskies took part in the 2021 Next Step Tournament run by CT Crush Baseball. After the Clinton’s recent games, the Huskies overall record stands at 6-7-1 on the season including tournament play.

The Huskies played four games total in the Next Step Tournament from July 16 through July 18. The Huskies came away from those contests with three losses and a tie.

In the first game, Clinton played the Hurricanes and took an 8-2 loss in the contest. The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but fell behind 2-1 when the Hurricanes scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Hurricanes added six runs in the fifth to make it 8-1. Clinton got a run back in the top of the sixth could not close the gap any further.

Mike Zingarella supplied a hit and a run in the loss. Declan Christopher had base hit, and Garret Garbinski scored a run. Garbniski pitched three innings in the game and surrendered three hits, two runs, and two walks, while striking out three. Brady Fritz pitched 1.1 innings, gave up a run a hit, and struck out two. Anderson Darr pitched a third of an inning, struck out one, but gave up four runs, two hits, and two walks.

In the second contest, the Huskies played the Crush and took a 7-3 defeat. The Crush got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and added two more runs for a 3-0 lead in the third. The Huskies tied it up with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but surrendered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-3. The Crush put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Zingarella and Dominic Carpenter both supplied a hit and a run. Christopher added a hit, and Fritz scored a run. Zingarella also took the mound and pitched five innings allowed four runs, five hits, four walks, and struck out seven.

In the third game of the tourney, Clinton battled the Bulldogs and lost a 10-1 decision. The Bulldogs added runs in the second (1), third (2), fourth (3), and sixth (4) innings. The Huskies scored their lone run of the contest in the fifth inning. Nick Spaziano, Fritz, and Zingarella each had singles. Fritz scored the Huskies’ run.

In the fourth game, the Huskies went up against the Blue Jays and gained an 8-8 tie. Clinton scored a run in the top of the first, and in the bottom of the frame, the Blue Jays got on top, 2-1. Each team scored three runs on the fourth inning. The Huskies added four more runs in the top of the fifth, and the Blue Jays came back to tie it with three runs in the fifth. The game was called a tie at that point.

Fritz provided a pair of hits and a pair of runs in the loss, as did Ryan Inglis. Zingarella and Spaziano had a hit apiece, while Carpenter scored two runs. Christopher and Garbinski also supplied a run each.

On July 27, the Huskies were back in East Shore action again and got back on the right foot with a double header against the CT Rage.

In the first game, the Huskies claimed a 4-1 victory over the Rage. Clinton took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs. The Rage halved that lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Huskies were able to add two more in the bottom of the frame for the 4-1 lead.

Fritz (2), Jacob Nelson (2), Ryan Egan (2), Garbinski, Ryan Luciani, and Nolan Sullivan added hits in the victory. Christopher (2), Carpenter, and Egan scored runs for the Huskies.

Garbinski started the game on the mound for the Huskies and pitched six innings allowing three hits, one run, three walks, and struck out 11 batters. Zingarella came on in relief to pitch an inning and allowed no runs, hits, or walks, and had a strikeout.

In the nightcap, Clinton earned a 3-2 win in a shortened game. The Huskies scored first with two runs in the second inning, and CT Rage tied it up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Clinton went back on top for good with another run in the third inning.

Carpenter and Darr each added a hit and a run from the plate. Garbinski and Sullivan supplied a hit apiece, while Egan added a run.

Anthony Ranaudo took the bump for Clinton and pitched three innings, allowed two hits, two runs, four walks, and struck out five batters.
