The Guilford 19-U AAU baseball team won three of its four games in the East Shore Travel League last week to improve its record to 9-6 on the season. Guilford took a loss against Turn2 Baseball White, but bounced back to get a win versus Turn2 Baseball Grey and then sweep a doubleheader with New England Knights Zima in recent action.

Guilford started off its week by hosting Turn2 Baseball White on July 21. The team took a 6-5 defeat in the contest at Guilford High School.

Two days later, Guilford was on the road to face Turn2 Baseball Grey and claimed a 10-0 victory at Painter Park in West Haven. Ryan Halas earned the win on the mound by pitching five innings for Guilford, allowing no runs on two hits to go with six strikeouts. Colin Pompano pitched a scoreless inning of relief to finish off the win for the Grizzlies.

Andrew Shosho doubled home a run for Guilford in the first inning. Shosho then hit a home run during the second inning. Guilford went on to score three runs in the third inning, plating runs on an RBI single by Mike Torre, a groundout by Chris Golino, and then on an error on a ball put in play by Sam Ametrano.

Shosho, Torre, and Alex Vincent each had two hits for Guilford in the victory. Torre recorded three RBI on the day. The Grizzlies made no errors in the field, led by first baseman Aiden McBrierty, who had eight fielding chances.

Then on July 23, Guilford took both ends of a home doubleheader against New England Knights Zima. Guilford posted a 10-1 win in the opener and then notched an 11-3 victory for the nightcap.

Shosho was the winning pitcher in the first game by tossing six innings for Guilford. Shosho gave up just one run on six hits and had three strikeouts in the victory.

Golino’s RBI single got the Grizzlies going in the first inning. Guilford’s offense then exploded for five runs in the second inning, keyed by RBI from Ametrano, Torre, Golino, and McBrierty. Ametrano and Colby Ambrosiak each had two hits in the win. Torre had four RBI.

The second game was close for a bit, but Guilford ultimately pulled away for another lopsided win. Shosho had an RBI single for the Grizzlies in the first inning. The game was tied 2-2 before Guilford took the lead by scoring a run on an error in the fourth inning. Halas followed with an RBI single, and then Ametrano drove in a run on a groundout for the third run of the frame.

The Grizzlies put the game away with six runs in the sixth. Golino, McBrierty, and Vincent all had RBI in the big inning.

Torre pitched five solid innings to get the win for Guilford. The left-hander gave up just two runs and two hits while striking out five batters on the day. McBrierty recorded the last three outs of the game to close out the victory.

Golino had two hits with two RBI in the win. Torre also had two hits, while McBrierty contributed a pair of RBI.
