Guilford AAU Splits a Couple of Double Dips


The Guilford U-19 AAU baseball team played five games in East Shore Travel League action last week and emerged from the slate with a pair of victories. Guilford now stands with a record of 6-5 on the summer season.

Guilford hit the road to play a doubleheader against Bluefish Travel Baseball at Veterans Memorial Field in Bridgeport on July 11. Guilford earned a split of the set by posting an 8-0 victory in the first game and then taking a 5-4 defeat in the second game.

Sam Ametrano pitched six scoreless innings for Guilford in its win against the Bluefish, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out four. The Grizzlies’ offense pounded out 10 hits in the victory, including two apiece from Joe Tafro and Alex Vincent. Guilford made no errors in the field, led by a strong defensive effort from first baseman Aiden McBrierty.

Already staked to a 4-0 lead, Guilford put up four runs in the sixth inning to bust the game open. Colby Ambrosiac, Colin Pompano, and Ametrano all drove home a run during the inning.

In the second game, Guilford had a 4-1 lead before the Bluefish scored two runs in both the top of the sixth and seventh innings to come away with a 5-4 victory. Mike Torre threw five innings for the Grizzlies, giving up three runs on three hits go with 11 strikeouts.

Torre hit a two-run single, and Ametrano had an RBI double to help Guilford score three runs in the third inning. McBrierty had the Grizzlies’ other hit in the game.

Then on July 14, Guilford faced City Angels Baseball Academy for a home game. The squad dropped a 6-4 decision in the contest at Guilford High School.

Three days later, Guilford was on the road for a doubleheader with CT Hank’s Yanks and split the set at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. Guilford posted a 7-1 victory in the opening contest and then took a 4-2 loss in the nightcap.

Andrew Shosho notched the victory on the mound in Guilford’s win against Hank’s Yanks. Shosho pitched six innings, allowing just one run on two hits to go with seven strikeouts. Tyler Zajkowski went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Grizzlies at the plate.

Guilford committed no errors in the field in the victory. Catcher Chris Golino led the defensive effort by handling all seven of his fielding opportunities.

Guilford took a 1-0 lead when Ametrano singled home a run in the top of the first inning. After Hank’s Yanks tied it in the bottom of the first, Guilford grabbed the lead for good by plating three runs in the second inning to go up 4-1. Colby Ambroziak had an RBI double, and Ryan Halas drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to highlight the big inning. Ambroziak and Halas both had two RBI on the day.

Hank’s Yanks came back to get a 4-2 win over Guilford in the second game of the doubleheader. The game was tied 2-2 before the Yanks used a two-run single to take a two-run lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Ametrano got the start on the hill and pitched five innings for the Grizzlies. Ametrano allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out six and walking one in the game. Golino went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Guilford.
