Branford Prep Legion Picks Up Two More Wins; Juniors Shut Out New Haven


Prep Legion Baseball

The Branford Prep Legion U-15 baseball team claimed victory in both of its games last week to improve its record to 8-5 in the Zone D standings for the season. Post 83 notched a 4-2 win over RCP and then defeated Torrington by a 6-2 score in last week’s action.

Branford opened up its week by earning a 4-2 road victory versus RCP at Cromwell High School on July 14. Caleb Allen picked up the win by pitching the first 4.1 innings for Post 83, allowing two runs and striking out five. Kyle Stegina pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to close out the victory and get the save.

Branford was down 2-1 entering the fourth inning, but then scored two runs in the frame and another run in the sixth to come away with the 4-2 win. Matthew Scalia went 3-for-3 with a double for Branford. Jaeden Konesky went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Stegina was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, two runs, and two stolen bases. Kyle Anderson went 1-for-2 with two RBI, Allen had a walk with a run and a stolen base, and Brandon Collins added a single and a walk in the victory.

Then on July 17, Branford was on the road to face Torrington and recorded a 6-2 victory at Fuessenich Park. Post 83 was down 2-1 before scoring three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh to walk away with the win.

Jason O’Connor pitched 6.1 innings for the victory, giving up just two runs (1 earned) to go with six strikeouts. Tim Rice retired the last two batters of the game to finish it off.

Stegina went 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base for Branford. Scalia went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Konesky was also 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs to go with a stolen base. Jack Smith drew two walks and scored a pair of runs in the win.

Junior Legion Baseball

The Branford Junior Legion U-17 baseball squad played two Zone 2 games and also had a non-zone contest on its schedule last week. Post 83 defeated New Haven and lost to Wallingford in Zone 2 action and took a loss against non-zone opponent Durham in last week’s matchups. Branford now has a record of 5-6 in the Zone 2 standings this summer.

In its first game of the week, Post 83 hosted New Haven and recorded a 2-0 shutout at Branford High School on July 13. Logan Cser tossed six scoreless innings to notch the win for Branford, giving up just two hits and one walk to go with five strikeouts. Ben Stegina worked a scoreless seventh inning to lock up the save.

Stegina also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four stolen bases on the day. Nico Falcioni had hit with a walk and a stolen base, while Harry Smith drew a walk and had a steal in Branford’s Zone 2 victory.

Two days later, Post 83 took a 5-3 road defeat versus Durham in a non-zone game. Trailing 3-2, Durham scored three runs in the sixth inning and then hung on for the win.

Dave Carroll started on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings for Branford. Billy Dellacamera went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI, Falcioni was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run, Smith went 1-for-1 with two walks, and Cser had a walk with two runs scored.

On July 17, Post 83 played a home game against Zone 2 opponent Wallingford and took an 8-2 defeat. Branford took a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning, but Wallingford scored five runs in the frame and went on to get the victory.

Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Post 83. Austin Rhodes was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Falcioni went 1-for-3 with a run, and Logan Fontaine drew two walks and scored a run.

Senior Legion Baseball

The Branford Senior American Legion U-19 baseball team lost three games last week to move to 5-12 in Zone 2 play this year. Post 83 will conclude its regular season by playing three games versus Madison and one game against Orange this week.

On July 12, the Post 83 Seniors hosted Wallingford and took an 11-2 loss at Branford High School. The following day, Branford faced West Haven on the road and lost the game by a 4-2 score at Piurek Field. Then on July 16, Branford was back on the road to face Hamden and took a 14-4 defeat.
