Branford Junior Legion Splits Two with Orange; Prep Legion Earns Walk-Off Win

The Branford Junior American 17-U baseball team hit the field to play a pair of games versus Orange in last week’s action. Post 83 came away from the set with a split to put its record at 4-5 for the summer season.

Branford started off its week by claiming a 6-0 road win over Orange at Brinley Field on July 10. Zac Turbert pitched a complete game shutout to lead Branford to the victory. Turbert tossed seven innings for Post 83, allowing three hits in the contest.

Branford scored a run in the third inning and another run in the fifth to grab a 2-0 lead. Post 83 broke the game open with three runs in the sixth inning and then tacked on another run in the seventh.

Austin Rhodes had a huge day at the plate by 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, and five RBI for Branford. Ben Stegina went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored, Nick Michaud was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, and Logan Cser also went 2-for-4.

Logan Fontaine drew three walks and scored two runs for Post 83. Turbert helped his cause on the mound by drawing a couple of walks and scoring a run.

The next day, Post 83 played a home game against Orange and took a 12-6 defeat at Branford High School. Orange jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the third inning and led the rest of the way.

Stegina went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Cser was 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBI for Branford. TJ Wenger drew three walks, scored two runs, and had two stolen bases. Fontaine and Rhodes both had a single with two walks, and Nico Falconi had a single with a run and an RBI. Rob Dolzani pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Prep Legion Baseball

The Branford Prep Legion 15-U baseball team rallied to earn a 2-1 home victory versus Ellington in walk-off fashion on July 11. With the win, Post 83 boosted its record to 6-5 in the Zone D standings this summer.

After Ellington scored a run in the top of the seventh inning, Branford was down 1-0 entering the bottom half of the frame when the two clubs squared off at North Branford High School. Post 83 plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to get the walk-off victory, winning it when Kyle Stegina scored on a wild pitch. Caleb Allen had scored the tying run on a groundout by Jason O’Connor. Stegina had a single with two walks, a run scored, and a stolen base in the game.

O’Connor pitched six scoreless innings for Post 83 versus Ellington, allowing two hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts. Tim Rice picked up the win after coming in for relief during the top of the seventh and recording all three outs in the inning.
