Branford Junior Legion Notches Two Wins Over Hamden; Seniors Split Pair with North Haven

Junior Legion Baseball

The Branford Junior Legion 17-U baseball team had two games against Hamden on its schedule last week. Post 83 defeated Hamden in first game of the set and then won the rematch to improve to 3-4 in the Zone 2 standings this year.

Branford started off its week by claiming a 10-0 victory over Hamden in a home game at Totoket Field on June 29. Cam Garrett tossed a complete-game shutout to lead Post 83 to the victory. Garrett pitched all five innings for Branford, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk to go with eight strikeouts.

Branford jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning versus Hamden. Post 83 added a run in the second inning, three runs in the third, and another run in the fourth before the game was called after the fifth.

Ben Stegina had a big day by going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases for Branford. Nico Falcioni went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, a run, and an RBI; while Austin Rhodes was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and a stolen base.

Dave Carroll went 1-for-1 with a walk, a run scored, and two RBI in the win. Zac Turbert went 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base; and Billy Dellacamera was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Post 83.

The very next day, Post 83 played a road game versus Hamden and prevailed by a 9-3 final at Legion Field. Branford was trailing Hamden 3-1 entering the top of the fourth inning. Branford’s offense put together three runs in the fourth, scored two runs in the fifth, and then added three in the sixth to pull away for the victory.

Turbert pitched the first four innings to get the win for Post 83. Stegina earned the save by throwing three perfect innings to close it out, fanning six batters in the process.

Rhodes went 2-for-3 with two walks, a run scored, an RBI to pace the Branford offense. Harry Smith was 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored, and two stolen bases in the win.

Additionally for Post 83, Nick Michaud went 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBI, Falcioni was 1-for-3 with walk, a double, and a run; and Logan Fontaine went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI. Logan Cser chipped in with an RBI single for Branford.

Senior Legion Baseball

The Branford Senior American Legion 19-U baseball team played two games with North Haven last week and split the pair against its fellow Zone 2 opponent. Branford took a loss to North Haven in the first game and then claimed victory in the second matchup to put its record at 4-6 in Zone 2 play for the season.

On June 29, Post 83 hosted North Haven and lost the contest by a 10-0 score at Branford High School. The following day, Branford was on the road to face North Haven and notched an 11-1 victory at Bailey Road Field.

Dan Farricielli tossed a complete game for Branford in the team’s win versus North Haven by pitching all five innings before the game was called. Post 83 scored six runs in the second inning and three runs in the third to get the convincing victory.

Prep Legion Baseball

The Branford Prep Legion 15-U baseball squad squared off with RCP for a home game last week. On June 29, Post 83 hosted RCP and notched a 4-0 victory at North Branford High School. Branford now has a record of 5-5 in Zone D action on the season.
