Maggiore Pitches One-Hitter as North Haven Claims First Victory

The North Haven Senior American Legion baseball team played four games last week and came away from the slate with its first win of the season by earning a 2-1 victory versus West Haven on June 24. North Haven also took losses in two other games with West Haven and then dropped a contest against Branford to move to 1-6 overall on the year.

In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 3-0 road loss to West Haven at Piurek Field on June 23. West Haven scored one run in the first inning, a run in the fourth inning, and another run in the sixth on its way to the victory. North Haven had runners at first and second in the top of the seventh inning, but was unable to get anyone home.

Alexander Bauman pitched 5.1 innings for North Haven, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk. Ryan Bauman came in for relief in the sixth and got the last two outs of the inning.

At the plate, Tyler Harger and Mike Brandt both went 2-for-3 for North Haven.

North Haven bounced back to get its first victory of the year when it edged out West Haven by a 2-1 score in a home game at Bailey Road Field on June 24. AJ Maggiore tossed a complete-game one-hitter for North Haven, which scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then hung on for the win.

Maggiore pitched all seven innings for North Haven in the victory, allowing just one run on one hit and one walk to go with six strikeouts. The only hit that Maggiore gave up was in the first inning, when West Haven scored its lone run of the game.

Trailing 1-0, North Haven plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Christian Maggiore and Caleb Somma both hit singles to get the rally started. Two batters later, Derek Mortali drew a two-out walk to keep it going and load the bases. Harger then stepped into the batter’s box and clubbed a two-run double to score both Maggiore and Somma and put North Haven up 2-1.

The rest was left to Maggiore, who retired the final 12 batters of the game on his way to tossing a one-hitter for North Haven.

Harger went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the victory. Daniel Boudreau and Mortali drew two walks apiece.

In the last game of the three-game series, North Haven dropped a 4-1 decision against West Haven at Bailey Road Field on June 6. West Haven scored two runs in the first inning and then two more in the third to get the win.

North Haven got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Will Sullivan walked, Tyler Signore hit a single, and then Boudreau drew a walk to load the bases. Mortali then came up as a pinch hitter and brought home Sullivan on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

North Haven was able to load the bases again in the seventh inning, but West Haven’s pitcher struck out the last batter of the game to finish off the 4-1 victory.

Ryan Bauman got the start on the mound and pitched five innings for North Haven, allowing four runs, just two of which were earned, on three hits. Mortali tossed two scoreless innings of relief in which he gave up just one hit.
