After recently winning Shoreline Conference and Class M state titles, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track and field team kept the good times rolling by recording a fourth-place finish at the State Open Championship last week. Led by a victory form senior Eamon Sweeney in the 110-meter hurdles, the Cougars scored 34 points as a team on their way to finishing fourth in the Open at Willow Brook Park on June 10.
Sweeney ran a time of 14.68 seconds in the preliminaries of 110 hurdles to place first and advance to the finals. Then in the finals, Sweeney lowered his time to 14.42 seconds and took first place overall by edging out Joshua Mooney of Stonington (14.44) by just two-hundredths of a second for the top spot, scoring 10 points for H-K.
Sweeney claimed third place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.72 seconds for the Cougars at the Open, giving the team six points. Sweeney also scored two points in the javelin by finishing in seventh place with a toss of 158 feet-3 inches.
Previously in the postseason, Sweeney finished first in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles at the Shoreline Championship and then took first in the 300 hurdles and the javelin at the Class M State Championship to go with a second-place finish in the javelin.
Senior Matt Jennings came in second place in the 800-meter run for H-K at the State Open. Jennings ran a time of 1:51.07 and only finished behind Ryan Farrell of Cheshire (1:50.58) for the top spot, recording eight points for H-K. Jennings also took first in the 800 at the Class M meet, won the 1,600 at Shorelines, and finished second in the 1,600 in Class M this spring.
Senior Max Cozean took 13th place in the 800 (1:59.06) for the Cougars at the Open. Cozean had placed second in the event at Shorelines and states.
Senior John Bruder scored eight points by earning runner-up honors in the shot put at the State Open. Bruder unleashed a toss of 50 feet-11.75 inches in the shot, only finishing behind Gary Moore, Jr., of Hillhouse (59-0.5). Bruder won the shot put and the discus at the Shoreline meet and then took first place in the shot put in the Class M meet.
Senior Sam Luther finished 10th in the javelin (151-6) for H-K at the State Open. Sophomore Orion Inkel took 17th place in the triple jump (40-2.5) for the Cougars. Inkel had won the triple jump at the Shoreline Championship.
H-K’s 4x800 relay of junior Caleb Freeman, sophomore Alexander Lara, junior Andrew Hedges, and junior Tyler Robinson finished in 18th place with a time of 8:40.84 at the Open.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Senior Kedarjah Lewis took first place in the long jump for the Haddam-Killingworth girls’ outdoor track team at the State Open Championship last week. Lewis scored 10 points for the Cougars with her long jump victory, putting the team in tie for 21st place in the State Open, which took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 10.
Lewis recorded a distance of 19 feet-1 inch on her way to finishing first in the long jump at the Open. Lewis placed ahead of Killingly’s Abigail Burgress, who recorded a distance of 18 feet-5 inches to take second place.
Lewis also qualified for the 100-meter dash and the triple jump at the State Open. Earlier in the postseason, she finished first in the 100, the 200, the long jump, and the triple jump at the Shoreline Conference Championship, after which she won the long jump and took second for both the long jump and triple jump at the Class M State Championship.
H-K also saw its 4x800 relay team compete at the State Open last week. The Cougars’ team of junior Brianna Minervino, sophomore Isabel Berardino, senior Katherine Melgar, and senior Meara Bodak posted a time of 10:25.74 to come in 21st place for the 4x800 relay.
Boys’ Golf
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ golf team hit the links to participate in the Division III State Championship at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain on June 7. The Cougars finished in 17th place at the state meet by recording a team score of 391.
Senior Greg Lynskey turned in H-K’s top performance by finishing in a tie for 43rd place at states. Lynskey carded a score of 92 for his 18-hole outing to place 43rd on behalf of the Cougars. Junior Andrew Fleig finished in a tie for 56th place with a score of 95 for H-K.
Junior Gabe Barile posted a total of 98 to finish in a tie for 69th place. Sophomore Jacob Maier scored a 106 and finished in tie for 85th place. Freshman Declan Kessler came in 97th place with a score of 119 for the Cougars.
