Old Saybrook Track Sends Competitors to the Open; Boys’ Golf Competes at Division IV Championship

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Old Saybrook girls’ outdoor track team had several athletes compete at the State Open Championship meet last week. The Rams scored five points and finished in a tie for 42nd place when the State Open took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 10.

Junior Anna Brodeur tallied five points for Old Saybrook when she claimed fourth place in the 400-meter dash. Brodeur clocked in with a time of 58.84 seconds en route to her fourth-place showing in the 400 at the State Open. She had previously placed first in the 400 at the Shoreline Conference Championship.

Sophomore Avery Rueckert took 11th place in the 200 with a time of 26.04 seconds for the Rams. Sophomore Abigail Colella finished 15th in the 300 hurdles by running a time of 49.41 seconds.

Senior Hannah Sumby cleared 9 feet in the pole vault to finish in 14th place on behalf of Old Saybrook. Sumby had recently finished first in the event at the Shoreline Conference Championship and the Class S State Championship. Sumby also took 21st place in the long jump at the Open by notching a distance of 15 feet-1 inch.

The Rams also saw all three of their relay teams compete at the State Open. Old Saybrook’s 4x100 relay of Colella, Rueckert, Brodeur, and senior Priscilla Gumkowski finished in 10th place (50.12); the 4x800 relay of junior Libby Stuart, sophomore Catherine Minegar, junior Caitlin Wiley, and senior Emily Stratton came in 15th place (10:10.08); and the 4x400 relay featuring Rueckert, Colella, Stuart, and Brodeur finished in 17th place (4:12.34). The 4x100 and 4x800 relays had posted first-place finishes at Shorelines this spring.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Old Saybrook boys’ outdoor track squad sent its 4x800-meter relay team to compete at the State Open Championship last week.

On June 10, the Rams’ 4x800 relay team of freshman Parker Cook, senior Jacob Schneider, sophomore Ryan Stratton, and senior Jack Wiley hit the track to participate in the State Open. Old Saybrook’s 4x800 took 15th place by recording a time of 8:31.76 at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

Boys’ Golf

The Old Saybrook boys’ golf team participated in the Division IV State Championship at Fairview Farm Golf Course in Harwinton on June 8. The Rams finished in 16th place by posting a team score of 401 at the state meet.

Senior Garrett Brady posted Old Saybrook’s score by shooting an 89 for his 18-hole round at states. Brady finished in 28th place for the individual Division IV standings with this performance.

Freshman Drew Kulman finished in a tie for 40th place with a score of 93, while fellow freshman Rylan Murphy scored a 99 to finish in 57th place. Freshman Jacob Speed finished in 88th place with a score of 120, and senior Giuseppe Sinibaldo scored a 125 to finish in 91st place on behalf of the Rams.
