Barnette Places in Two Events at the Open; Branford Golf Team Competes in States

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Senior Mekhi Barnette represented the Branford boys’ outdoor track team when he competed in a pair of events at last week’s State Open Championship. The meet took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 10.

Barnette compete in the triple jump and the long jump for the Hornets at the State Open. In the triple jump, Barnette recorded a mark of 41 feet-2.5 inches and finished in 10th place for the event. Barnette also finished in 14th place in the triple jump by hitting a distance of 20 feet-4.5 inches. Barnett had previously won the high jump and placed second in the triple jump for Branford at the SCC West Sectional Championship, after which he finished second in both events at the SCC Championship, followed by a third-place finish in the triple jump and an eighth-place performance in the high jump at the Class MM State Championship.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Branford girls’ outdoor track team had one athlete compete in an individual event and also saw one of its relays participate at the State Open Championship last week.

Freshman Tess Wasiolek ran the 1,600 for Branford when the State Open took place at Willow Brook Park on June 10. Wasiolek finished in 10th place by recording a time of 5:14.91 on behalf of the Hornets. Wasiolek had recently taken second place in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 at the Class M State Championship.

Branford’s 4x100 relay team of freshman Chayse Gueco, junior Katie Laska, junior Samantha Burzynski, and freshman Joelle Budz finished in 21st place at the State Open. The Hornets’ quartet posted a mark of 51.93 seconds on its way to taking 21st place.

Boys’ Golf

The Branford boys’ golf team took part in the Division II State Championship at Timberlin Golf Course in Berlin on June 7. The Hornets posted a team score of 344 to finish in 11th place as a squad at states.

Senior Finn Thompson turned in Branford’s best showing by finishing in a tie for 35th place at state meet. Thompson carded a score of 83 for his 18-hole outing on his way to taking 35th.

Senior Billy Linder finished in a tie for 44th place by scoring an 86 for the Hornets. Freshman Keegan LaLonde shot an 87 to finish in a tie for 50th place at states.

Junior Justin Acquarulo was next in line with an 88 to finish in a tie for 58th place. Sophomore Colin Deane finished in a tie for 80th place with a score of 94 for Branford.
