Antony Places 6th in 3,200 at the State Open; Guilford Golf Squad Competes in Division II Championship

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team sent two athletes to compete at the State Open Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 10. The Grizzlies scored three points to finish in a tie for 51st place in the State Open standings.

Junior Julia Antony finished in sixth place in the 3,200-meter run for Guilford at the State Open. Antony ran a time of 10:55.30 on her way to finishing sixth and score three points for the Grizzlies.

Antony had previously finished second in the 3,200 at the SCC West Sectional Championship and the SCC Championship, followed by a fourth-place performance in the Class L State Championship. She also finished first in 1,600 at West Sectionals and then claimed first place again in the event at the SCC Championship.

Junior Rachel Ellison also represented Guilford at the State Open by throwing the javelin on behalf of the Grizzlies. Ellison had taken place in the javelin at sectionals, fourth at SCCs, and fourth in Class L.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track program was represented by its 4x800-meter relay at the State Open Championship meet last week.

Guilford’s 4x800 relay team of sophomore Bretton Garrick, junior Thomas Gregory, junior Justin Shiffrin, and senior Reese Puchalski finished in 12th place when the State Open took place at Willow Brook Park on June 10. The Grizzles’ quartet recorded a time of 8:22.82 on its way to finishing in 12th place at the Open. The relay had previously finished in second place at the SCC East Sectional Championship, fourth at the SCC Championship, and third in the Class MM State Championship.

Boys’ Golf

The Guilford boys’ golf team hit the links to compete at the Division II State Championship at Timberlin Golf Course in Berlin on June 7. The Grizzlies finished in 17th place by recording a team score of 363 at the state meet.

Senior Peter Keanna led the pack for Guilford by finishing in a tie for 44th place at states. Keanna shot a score of 86 for his 18-hole round on his way to taking 44th place. Junior Owen Angkatavanich was next in line for the Grizzlies by posting a score of 88 to finish in a tie for 58th place.

Senior Shane Markle finished in a tie for 80th place with a score of 94 at the Division IV meet. Fellow senior Shea Thibault scored a 95 to finish in a tie for 84th place. Senior Collin Lee carded a 98 for Guilford and finished in a tie for 92nd place.
