Westbrook Girls Tennis Reaches Class S Semis; Track Teams See Solid Results in States

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team wrapped up its season with competition in the Class S State Tournament. The Knights reached semifinal round before losing a match against Litchfield, which brought their 2021 campaign to a close. Westbrook finished the year with a final overall record of 17-3.

The No. 3 seed Knights faced Immaculate at home in the first round, and they won the contest easily 6-1 with the only loss coming out of the No. 3 doubles position.

The quarterfinals were next with Westbrook hosting Shepaug Valley, and the two teams played a very competitive match with the Knights claiming the 4-3 win.

Westbrook saw a 6-0, 6-0 win from Julia Farnoli at the No. 1 singles position, as well as a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory from Gianni Salisbury at the No. 2 spot.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Bree Koplas and Xan Zanzalari claimed a 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 victory. The No. 2 duo of Olivia Palumbo and Adriana Stranieri earned a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) win as well.

As all other matches except Salibury’s had concluded, the team score was knotted at 3-3. Salisbury had lost her first set 6-0, but managed to fight back and take the second set by a score of 6-4. As the team’s fate hung in the balance, Salisbury played a decisive third set. The last point had a volley that lasted 67 strokes before Gianni finally secured a 6-4 win in the final set.

The next day, Westbrook headed to No. 2 seed Litchfield for the semifinal. The Knights lost the match 5-2 with victories coming from the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles tandems. Koplas and Zanzalari grabbed a 7-5, 6-1 win, while Stranieri and Palumbo claimed a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook had a number of competitors representing at the Class S State Championship at Willow Brook Park on June 3. The Knights earned 8.5 points as a team for 23rd place overall at the event.

Lauren Horne took home Westbrook’s top marks with a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a distance of 94 feet-8 inches.

Elizabeth Gallagher claimed seventh place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.2, and she finished in 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.32 seconds.

Halley Pierson tied for seventh place in the pole vault clearing the bar at 7 feet-6 inches.

Brooke Neri finished in 10th place in the 3,200 with a time of 12:34.52, and Marguerite Barlett came in 14th place with a time of 13:13.8.

In the triple jump, Leticia Pires claimed 10th place with a distance of 30-8.5, and she also earned 13th place in the long jump with a leap of 13-10.5.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Knights had several players qualify for competition at the Class S State Championship at Willow Brook Park on June 3. Westbrook tallied 23 points as a squad to earn 12th place.

Brett Metcalfe had the Knights’ best finish of the day with second place in the high jump, clearing 5 feet-10 inches.

Luca Troop had a strong day with a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 23.66 seconds. Troop claimed third place in the long jump with a distance of 20-4.

Troop was also part of a successful Westbrook 4x100 relay quartet that also included Zachary Boardman, Brandon Naccarato, and Brenden Engels who claimed fifth place with a time of 45.40.

Naccarato earned seventh place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.81 seconds.
