Valley Boys’ Lacrosse Loses in Shoreline Final, States; Boys’ Tennis Reach Class S Semis

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Valley Regional boys’ lacrosse team recently played in the Shoreline Conference Tournament final against Haddam- Killingworth before heading into Class S State Tournament Competition.

The Warriors met H-K in the Shoreline final and lost a hard-fought 11-9 contest against the Cougars.

Valley fell behind in the first quarter after the Cougars took a 2-1 lead. In the second quarter, Valley tried to keep it close, at once point trailing 3-2, but by the end of the first half, H-K had established a 6-2 lead over the Warriors.

As the game wore on, Valley did find its scoring prowess scoring two goals in the third period and five goals in the fourth. The Warriors reached the precipice of getting back into the game at 11-9, but just couldn’t make that final push.

Senior Keenan Pindar scored four goals, while Clark Burleson added three goals to his credit along with an assist. Senior Kormac Kline supplied a goal and an assist, and Cooper Strecker did the same. Axel Johnson made 11 saves in the loss.

On June 2, the No. 6 seed Warriors hosted No. 11 seed Sheehan in the first round of the Class S State Tournament. Valley lost a close 12-11 contest to the Titans.

The Warriors finish the season with an overall record of 10-6.

Boys’ Tennis

The Warriors competed in the Class S State Tournament last week and made it to the semifinals where they took a loss to Westbrook to close out the season. Valley finished with an overall record of 14-4 on the year.

On June 1, the Warriors played a pair of contests as part of states. The No. 5 seed Valley hosted No. 12 seed Wamogo and claimed a 4-2 victory in the first round.

Later that same day the Warriors headed to No. 4 seed Montville where they took a 4-2 victory in the quarterfinals.

The next day, Valley went up against a familiar foe in No. 1 seed Westbrook. Valley dropped a 5-2 match against the Knights, but No. 3 singles player Hayden Lombardi managed to best Westbrook’s Cooper Whitehouse, who hadn’t lost a match all season to that point.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors competed in the Class M State Tournament last week. After a play-in round, the Warriors made it to the first round of the bracket, where they took a loss that ended the 2021 campaign. Valley finished with a final overall record of 11-6 on the year.

On May 28, the No. 15 seed Warriors hosted No. 18 seed Suffield and claimed a 5-2 victory to move onto the first round.

On June 1, Valley headed to Milford to take on No. 2 seed Jonathan Law. The Warriors dropped a 4-2 decision versus Law to end the campaign.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Warriors sent a handful of representatives to the Class S State Championship meet this past week. Valley had a few notable performances which tallied five points for the team overall to earn 32nd place in the meet.

Connor Lunz accounted for Valley’s five points in the meet with his performance in shot put. Lunz’s throw of 42 feet-6.75 inches earned him fourth place.

DiAngelo Jean-Pierre came in 32nd in the 200-meter dash clocking in at 23.94 seconds, and he also took 33rd place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Valley had a number of representatives at the Class M State Championship meet on June 2. Valley had several notable performances that tallied 4.5 points for the team overall to earn 21st place.

Madelyn Costello tied for fourth place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet-10 inches. In the 1,600-meter run, Grace Jacaruso turned in a time of 5:50.55 for 13th place.

In the 100, Audrey Lenda took 21st place clocking in at 14.02 seconds, Madeline Jacaruso came in 25th at a mark of 14.17 seconds, and Hanna Babek finished in 32nd with a time of 13.64 seconds.

Lenda also placed 12th in the long jump with a distance of 15-5.25.

The 4x800 relay quartet of Ava Cunningham, Grace Jacaruso, Brooke Rankin, and Emilee Surber came in 13th with time of 10:49.45. The 4x100 relay group of Babek, Lenda, Addi Marchese, and Madeline Jacaruso took 14th with a time of 53.32.

In the 200, Madeline Jacaruso (28.9) and Babek (29.07) came in 18th and 20th place, respectively. In the 300 hurdles, Costello came in 30th with a time of 56.12. Loretta Cecchini recorded a height of 7-6 in the pole vault.
