Rams’ Girls’ Lacrosse Loses in Shoreline Final, States; Track Teams Impress at Class S Championship

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams recently played in the Shoreline Conference Tournament final before getting into the teeth of the Class S State Tournament. Old Saybrook lost to North Branford in the Shoreline final and then reached the quarterfinals in states. In the quarters, the Rams lost to Sheehan and their season came to a close. Old Saybrook finished with a final overall record of 15-2 on the year.

On May 27, the Rams faced off with North Branford at The Indian River Complex, where they took a 9-3 defeat.

North Branford took an early advantage in the contest, outscoring the Rams 5-2 in the first half of the game. The Thunderbirds continued to apply the pressure in the second half, outpacing Old Saybrook 4-1 en route to the 9-3 final tally.

Old Saybrook received two goals from Lily Cody, and Laura Day scored a goal in the contest as well. Sam Wakelee made four saves in the net for the Rams.

On June 1, No. 1 seed Old Saybrook hosted No. 16 seed Rocky Hill in the first round of states. The Rams took a decisive 17-3 victory over Rocky Hill.

Two days later, Old Saybrook went up against No. 8 seed Sheehan in the quarterfinal. The Rams took a 7-4 loss against the Titans to bring their 2021 campaign to a close.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Rams competed in the Class S State Championship meet at Willow Brook Park on June 3. Old Saybrook came in third place as a group with a score of 67.5.

Hannah Sumby grabbed the gold in the pole vault, clearing a height of 9 feet-6 inches. Ava Smoliga also had a solid mark of 7 feet-6 inches, which earned sixth place. Christina Grace came in seventh place at 7-6 as well.

Sumby also claimed fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 16-0.75, and sixth place in the triple jump with a distance of 32-2.

Ann Brodeur snagged a silver in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.12 seconds.

Abigail Colella brought home the bronze in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.61.

Avery Rueckert took fifth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.72 seconds.

The Rams’ relays turned in impressive efforts at states. The 4x100 group of Colella, Rueckert, Brodeur, and Priscilla Gumkowski took second place with a time of 50.73.

Old Saybrook also saw a second-place finish from the 4x400 quartet of Rueckert, Colella, Libby Stuart, and Brodeur with a time of 4:11.8.

Also the 4x800 team of Stuart, Emily Stratton, Caitlin Wiley, and Catherine Minegar claimed second place with a time of 10:08.14.

In the 800, Stuart took seventh place with a mark of 2:30.92, Stratton came in 14th at 2:34.13, Minegar took 17th with a time of 2:36.22, and Wiley earned 19th with a time of 2:37.5.

Avery Nosal came in eighth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.58. Additional, Nosal took 17th in the triple jump with a distance of 29-6.25. Carla Castro took 12th in the 3,200, clocking in at 12:58.14. Sanai Baker came in 27th place in the 100 with a time of 13.85.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook had a number of athletes represent at the Class S State Championship Meet at Willow Brook Park on June 3. The Rams tallied 11 points and came in 21st place as a team as a result.

In the 1,600, Parker Cook came in seventh place with a time of 4:43.05, and Jacob Schneider finished close behind in ninth place with a time of 4:45.41.

Mitchell Dipalma earned seventh place in the 110-meter hurdles, and he finished with a time of 17.30. Dipalma also claimed eighth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.78.

The Rams 4x800 relay of Parker Cook, Jacob Schneider, Stratton, and Wiley brought home the bronze with a time of 8:29.58.

Old Saybrook’s 4x100 relay team of Matthew Johnson, Bradley Kullmann, Tyler Milardo-Denler, and Nicholas Rothman took 11th place with a time of 47.18.

The 4x400 team of Rothman, Logan Worman, Stratton, and Wiley came in 10th with a time of 3:45.27.

In the triple jump, Matthew Johnson earned 12th place with a distance of 37-0.5.

Boys’ Golf

Old Saybrook competed in a single non-league match last week and came away with a loss in the contest. The defeat moves the Rams record to 2-11-1 on the year.

On June 2, Old Saybrook lost a 161-185 home contest to Portland in non-league play. The match was held at Fenwick Golf Course, and Luke Stennant of Portland medalled with a 36.

Garrett Brady turned in a scorecard of 42, while Drew Kulmann tallied a 45. Rylan Murphy had a nice score of 46. Jacob Speed had a score of 52 while Joe Sinibaldo ended up with a 57.
